When a few too many parents began dropping their kids off at school in England, wearing pajamas, one principal had a lot to say about it.
What started out as 10 parents, quickly turned into 20 parents dropping off their kids at school wearing pajamas. Principal, Kate Chisholm from Skerne Park Academy in England said, “Basically it started with a few, then it went up to 10, then They were coming to parents’ evenings and Christmas concerts in pajamas as well. When it got to that point, I thought I might have to send a little letter out.”
Chisholm began increasingly frustrated with parents’ choice of dress, so she decided to take a stand in order to set an example for the students. Chisholm sent out a letter to parents saying asking parents to “take the time to dress appropriately in day wear that is suitable for the weather conditions” in order to “set our children a good example about what is appropriate and acceptable in all aspects of life.”
“If we’re to raise standards it’s not too much to ask parents to have a wash and get dressed,” she said.
Chisholm continued saying, “I don’t give two hoots how people dress at home, I just think if they’re a good role model for their children and want them to get a job and better yourself then they ought to get dressed.”
As you can probably imagine, parents were outraged by the letter and felt criticized and attacked on a personal level. One of the mothers, Karen Routh unapologetically showed up at Skerne Park Academy in her pajamas, and told reporters, “Wearing pajamas is probably better than somebody wearing a short skirt and showing the back of their behind.”
“I’ve seen people go in what I would class as not appropriate wear like belly tops and short skirts and things like that,” she said. “So what’s the difference between them wearing those sort of clothes and the school saying ‘Right, you can’t wear that’ as opposed to saying to somebody you can’t wear pajamas?” Routh continued.
Routh says was not trying to protest the letter, but she believes the school should have bigger priorities than nitpicking parents’ outfits.
However, another parent at the school, Phil Naylor disagrees. He says, “We all support the school and I hope this helps get the message across to parents,” he said. “It’s disgraceful, we should be guiding our children not giving them bad habits.”
