Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama, is shocked when they delivered five sets of twins in one week!
Since October 13, five sets of twins were born at the hospital, and on Thursday all 10 babies posed for an adorable photo shoot in the nursery. “To have them all around the same time is just incredible,” Dr. Brent Hurd, a local obstetrician who delivered three sets of the twins told Times Daily. The first set of twins were born on Oct. 13, and another set followed on Monday and Tuesday, and the final two sets were born on Wednesday.
Two of the parents, Alissa and Derek Malone welcomed their twin daughters on Wednesday, and they recalled they were shocked to find out they were expecting twins at an ultrasound in March. When Alissa when in for a routine checkup with her obstetrician, Dr. Hurd, she learned that several other families were expecting twins and due around the same time as her! Despite knowing this, the Malone’s never expected all of the births would actually happen in the same week! “It’s a pretty cool way to start,” Derek said.
Melissa DeFoor, the patient care manager of women and children’s services at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital (ECM) recalls that in the mid-1980s there were three sets of twins in the hospital nursery at the same time, but never five!”We’ve had several nurses from other areas of the hospital that have nursery experience come and help and other people come in on their off days, too,” DeFoor said.
One of the other moms, Trinere Garner, gave birth to her twin daughters on Tuesday, and she was also surprised when she found out there were other twins too! Garner says that finding out she was having twins was an “answered prayer,” as her first daughter died last year about an hour after being delivered at 26 weeks gestation. “After I lost my first little girl, I prayed and prayed,” she said. “I felt like if I did get pregnant again, I wouldn’t mind if it was twins. It is a blessing to have them both.”
Dr. Hurd says that there were almost six sets of twins, as there was another mother-to-be in the hospital, but she wasn’t yet ready to deliver.
