When John and Cindy Billesberger couldn’t find their dog Bruno anywhere, the couple understandably feared the worst.

The Billesberger’s explained to CBC News that all three of their retrievers followed John onto his field in Estevan, Canada, but by the end of the day he noticed one of them was missingBruno never came back,” Billesberger said, adding that it was unusual. “Bruno likes his food. He always comes for supper.”

The Billesberger’s began searching the field for Bruno, and John worried that he may have inadvertently dropped a large bale on Bruno. After double checking all the work he did the previous day, he was relieved that he didn’t find Bruno under a Bale.

As the days went on, the family expanded their search and on Oct. 14, they finally found their lost dog, nearly a month after he first went missing. “I was about a half a mile away from the house,” Billesberger said. He noticed that one of his other retrievers was lingering over a spot on the neighbor’s property, and when he checked it out he found Bruno under the grass. He had apparently fallen to the bottom of a well, and he laid there curled up.

“It was about four feet wide and 10 feet down — and there was Bruno,” he said. “He lifted his head. But he couldn’t bark.” John was astounded that Bruno survived almost a month in the well. “His eyes were sunk in, they were infected. Cuts along his eyes, all his paws – he’s lost pads. He’s lost fur off his back end and was just a mess,” an emotional Cindy Billesberger, the dog’s owner told CTV News.

John immediately called his son, who, using rope, jumped int the well and picked Bruno out of the mud and lifted him up. “Then we got him into the truck and on to the vet in Estevan,” John said.

But the family wondered how Bruno could have survived all that time, then they realized that all he must have had was water, as it rained a few of the days that he was missing.

Bruno lost about 35lbs during the ordeal, but since he has been found, “he looks much better.”

“He recognizes us and we’re very hopeful,” John says. While Bruno is suffering from anemia, and cannot return home yet, every day he is getting stronger and stronger.

“So, we’re very optimistic,” the family says.
