After a morning of an unspeakable tragedy, one small act of kindness can go a long way.

In Des Moines, Iowa, an outpouring of love and charity is occurring after two police officers were shot and killed early Wednesday morning in ambush-style attacks, according to local news KCCI. Then in Urbandale, not far from Des Moines, a woman brought water to the police station to help. She also offered up a hug for emotional support.

It wasn’t a particularly grand movement, and it didn’t require much effort, but the kind act cast away the shadows of hurt that lingered upon the hearts of those affected. It doesn’t take much to cause change, nor does it require lots of effort. It’s only the little things that make big ripples.

In this case, it was a heartfelt hug and an outpouring of tears as she said, “I don’t know how else to help or what else to do.”

Sometimes, it’s in the moments where we don’t know what else to do that we do the most. It is once we are freed from knowing how to act in a situation that we are free to act from the heart.
