Eric Stuyvesant never thought he would do anything to harm his son named Michael, until one day back in June 2015.
Stuyvesant explains to WFAA News that he’d seen stories in the news about parents who left their kids in the car, but he never thought it would happen to him. He says that he and his wife Michelle are experienced parents, and they both have children from previous marriages and were raising their eighth child Michael together.
“Michael surprised us,” Michelle said. But on one hot Dallas day in June, a change in their morning routine changed their lives forever. Every day, Eric drove his son the babysitter and then dropped his wife off at work. But, Michelle needed to start arriving a little earlier at the office, so they decided to drop her off first.
He was on autopilot, and he drove home to shower, check his email, and prepare for the day. Stuyvesant didn’t realize that Michael, who was three at the time, was still in his car seat. More than one hour had passed until he ran to the car with only one thing in mind. “I killed my son,” he thought. “I was absolutely sure that I had killed him. And when I got to him, he was still alive, and at that point in time I felt that as long as he’s breathing there’s hope.”
Michael was in the backseat sweating profusely, and his eyes even started to turn gray, and his lips were blue. He grabbed his son and ran outside, jumping into a cold shower with him to cool his body temperature down while one of his older kids called 911. Michael was rushed to the hospital and survived the incident, but unfortunately suffered severe damage. He had six strokes while sitting in the car, and his road to recovery was a long one. “He learned to walk again, learned to sit up again,” Eric said.
Michael is now almost entirely recovered and progressing well, but the incident is still tough for him and his wife to speak of.
