A grieving cat was so devastated by her owner’s death that she spent one year living at her grave.
On one morning in Central Java, Indonesia, Keli Keningau Prayitno noticed the stranded cat, but when she tried to take it home with her, it returned to its same spot and cuddling near her owner’s blue headstone.
Every day since her owner’s death, people have noticed the cat walk to her former home where she is fed by the the owner’s children, then she returns to the grave. Despite also being given food and water by good Samaritans as well, the cat refuses to leave the grave, and even sleeps there every night.
Keli tells the Mirror, “Since the cat’s mother died she has stayed here at the grave. She does not want to go home. She has been here for almost a year. I thought she was homeless and tried to help, but every time she wold keep returning to the same place. I saw her every day and noticed that she was always there, but sometimes would leave for a couple of hours then come back.”
Keli says he followed the cat one day and discovered the cat’s owner was an old lady named Kundari. Despite being offered new homes, even a year later the cat is still found near the grave. “We take some food and water to the cat, but she still likes to go home. She’s at the grave every day.”
Sadly, this is not the first story we heard about an animal being so heartbroken that they refused to leave their deceased owner’s side. Last year, it emerged that a dog waited every day for a year at a roadside in Thailand for his missing owner. These stories break our heart, but they show how much love animals do have for their family.
