When Chelsee Lopez got home from work at 1 a.m. one night, she noticed a big black dog running near her car.

Since Lopez had never seen the dog before, she worried he might be aggressive, so she used caution when approaching. “I noticed that she didn’t have a collar but her fur on her neck looked like there used to be one there,” Lopez told The Dodo. “I could tell she was a family dog, so I assumed she just got out of someone’s yard or something.” Not thinking much of it, Lopez left food and water on her porch for the dog; then she went inside to bed.

She figured the dog would eventually head home, but she never did. The poor door sat on the porch the entire night crying. Lopez played with her a little before she went to class, and when she returned home, the dog who she began calling Maggie, was still there. “I just kept thinking that someone would be looking for her, or she would go home,” Lopez said.

She took pictures of Maggie and walked around the neighborhood, hoping someone would recognize her. Maggie followed her the entire time, in desperate need of attention. That night, Lopez and her husband took Maggie into their home, and the next day they brought her to an animal control officer, who took her to a shelter.

“My husband and I fell in love with her and wanted to make sure she was alright,” Lopez said. “So we would visit as much as we could, and on days we couldn’t visit her, we called up there to see if her family claimed her. We wanted it to work out for her so bad.” The Lopez family waited one week for Maggie’s owners to come forward, but they never did. After that, Maggie went up for adoption.

“We showed up as soon as the shelter opened to take her home,” Lopez said. As much as the Lopez’s wanted Maggie to return to her original home, when that didn’t happen, they were more than happy to take her now. Now, as Lopez described to the Dodo, Maggie “is the glue to the family.”

The couple already had a dog named Charlie, and while they were scared at first that he wouldn’t get along with Maggie, Lopez says that almost immediately, Maggie worked her way into Charlie’s heart too. “When we brought her home, they fell in love with each other,” Lopez said. “He no longer barks when we leave the house, as long as Maggie is there.

Maggie was getting along famously with the entire family, but a few months ago, Lopez noticed Maggie started losing weight, and after seeing a vet, Maggie was diagnosed with diabetes

Since her diagnosis, Maggie has lost a lot of her sight, but she’s still the happiest dog ever thanks to her parents and doggy siblings. Lopez says she’s happy Maggie showed up on her porch because “she was meant for us.”
