A Quebec woman experienced a ‘phantom pregnancy’ a month after meeting her boyfriend online.
Paul Servat said he was devastated when he found out that Barbara Bienvenue had never been pregnant at all. The couple met in mid-2013 and became serious after Bienvenue said she was pregnant, one month after they met online.
According to WebMD, symptoms of pseudocyesis include interruption of the menstrual period, swollen belly, enlarged and tender breasts, changes in the nipples, and possibly milk production, a feeling of fetal movements, nausea and vomiting, weight gain, and even labor pains.
A relative told QMI Agency, “this isn’t the first time she’s done it. But honestly, we never would have thought she was sick enough to do it again.”
Servat said he was devastated when the couple showed up to the delivery room and were told doctors had no record of her medical records. In fact, the only records doctors did have was a blood test showing Bienvenue was not pregnant. Servat said he is no longer seeing Bienvenue, who is undergoing a psychological evaluation. He also returned or donated all the gifts the couple had received.
