Have you ever stuck your hand inside the couch cushions and been fortunate enough to find something that doesn’t make you cringe?

What about reaching your hand inside a sofa your roommate bought from a thrift store and finding $40,000 in cold, hard cash? That’s exactly what happened to two New York college kids who bought a lumpy, old couch and made out well on their investment!

The couch was purchased from The Salvation Army for $20 in 2014, a price that turned out to be a real bargain when they uncovered the cash hiding inside. When the owners of the couch noticed it was unusually lumpy, they investigated. That investigation led to them finding a folder with $700 inside. When they dug deeper, they found many more folders stuffed with wads of money.

One of the folders had the name of a woman, a widow they managed to track down in the phone book. After speaking with her kids, they discovered she had been storing the money in the couch cushions as opposed to a bank account. However, her kids unknowingly donated the couch…and the $40,000 inside it.

The roommates received a reward of an undisclosed amount for their act of kindness! They were also featured on a sweet news story to go with it.

What would you have done if you found $40,000 in a smelly old couch?
