If there’s one statement that seems to be true about Americans, it’s that we love to have sex.
Based on the map below, we also love having unprotected sex. Rent Application put together this lovely little map for us showing how bad STDs are ranked by city. They used data that came directly from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in 2013. The data only shows reports of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia (herpes data was not collected). To normalize the data, it was measured in rates per 100,000 people. Only cities with significant populations were represented. Rural areas are not shown on the map.
Here are the top 10 cities with the highest STD rates:
Rank | City | Total STDs | Total STDs per 100,000 |
1 | Montgomery, AL | 4371 | 1899.20 |
2 | St Louis, MO | 5942 | 1867.54 |
3. | West Memphis, AR (Part of the Memphis Metro) | 859 | 1717.29 |
4. | Philadelphia, PA | 26151 | 1689.77 |
5. | Norfolk, VA [Norfolk Naval Base] | 4013 | 1632.74 |
6. | Baltimore, MD | 10134 | 1630.98 |
7. | Richmond, VA1 | 3248 | 1544.39 |
8. | New Orleans, LA | 5614 | 1520.37 |
9. | Killeen, TX [Ft. Hood] | 4887 | 1512.83 |
10. | Fayetteville, NC [Ft. Bragg] | 4826 | 1489.2 |
Clocking in at roughly 1,900 cases for every 100,000 people, Montgomery, Alabama is the unfortunate winner for the most STD cases. If you’re single or sexually active with multiple partners, you might be inclined to think that number is pretty low. Remember though, this chart takes into account the total population. Think about all those monogamous, under-age, and sexually inactive people living in the city that get grouped in regardless. Suddenly, the statistics seem a lot more risky. So remember kids, if you’re going to tap it, make sure you wrap it and always get tested regularly.
