Last week, a loggerhead turtle was pulled out from the ocean at Havana Beach in Beirut, Lebanon.

According to Green Area, witnesses at the beach saw a beachgoer pull the turtle out from the sea and attack him and use him for selfies.

Jason Mier, executive director of Animals Lebanon, told The Dodo: “We were not present when the turtle came to shore and have to rely on pictures and accounts of people who were present.”

“Luckily, other people were there who did care and stopped this and helped get the turtle to a safe area,” Mier continued.

Animals Lebanon helped the injured turtle after the incident and has provided it with veterinary care so it can soon be returned to the ocean. “There is a noticeable depression in the head where the bone has been damaged and sea water is able to enter the bone. A small amount of pressure around this area and the water seeps back out,” he continued.

Mier adds that while there is a possibility that the turtle’s head injury may have been from a previous experience, he consulted two veterinarians that believe the turtle’s wound came from being struck recently.

The turtle’s rehabilitation pool is set up, and in 15 days, he will be reassessed to see how far he’s progressed.

We’re thankful Animals Lebanon rescued this turtle, and to learn more about how you can help, please visit their Facebook.

Kids around the country are already celebrating the start of summer vacation or graduation, but as we see in this next story, not all teenagers will spend the next few months hanging with friends, hitting the pool or beach, or working a summer job.

School may have just ended but Mary Kate Beachler of Canton, SD is excited to report for duty at United States Military Academy, something other teens may scoff at but she has waited for her entire life.

“My mom is a graduate and so it’s always been in like the back of my mind, but when I was in 6th grade I was able to go to a reunion with her and once I saw the campus and got the vibe of the whole place I fell in love with it,” Beachler told Kekoland Television, of her mother who enrolled 30 years earlier.

[Kokoland Television]
[Kokoland Television]
Susan Irons-Beachler was ecstatic when her daughter announced she’d be following in her footsteps and received her appointment this past January.

“I am very proud of her, that she stuck with the process of going through the application and made it and was accepted,” Irons-Beachler said. “And so that made me very, very proud. Both her dad and I are really proud of her for that.”

Although it was a long and difficult application process to get into the esteemed West Point academy, Beachler said it was all worth it.

“I’m all about giving back, and like serving our country is like the biggest way to possibly give back ever to those people. Especially because both my parents are veterans and they were in the army and so I saw how that benefited them throughout their lives and so I want to do that too,” she said.

Joan Bremer is bravely opening up about a topic our society has deemed as taboo. She believes it’s time to break the silence and we couldn’t agree more.

Only seven weeks into her pregnancy, Bremer experienced uncontrollable cramps and bleeding. A trip to the doctor confirmed her worst nightmare: she had miscarried her baby.

“It took about three days to recover, and during that time I thought of getting a tattoo to mark this life experience,” the 31-year-old told TODAY Parents. “For me, all the tattoos I have signify something, and even though this was a painful time, I still wanted to be able to remember it in some way.”

[TODAY]
[TODAY]
The would-be-mom from California found an image of a single line connecting two hearts to remember her baby by and says she will add a rainbow, a symbol often used when a “miracle” child is born after miscarriage, if she ever has kids again.

[TODAY]
[TODAY]
“Losing a baby, even if it’s early in pregnancy, is just so difficult. For me, it was healing to be able to speak about it. I know there is a certain silence about miscarriages and pregnancy losses, but I am not ashamed that this happened to me,” Bremer told TODAY Parents. “That was one of my motivations for getting the tattoo in the first place — I really think it’s healing to be able to talk about it.”

Since sharing her experience, something extremely common but often not spoken about, other women have shared their own tattoos on social media. It happened to us, and it’s happened to countless other people. I want to be able to share and talk about it, and in talking about it move on from the pain and disappointment,” she said.

It’s all fun and games until your head gets stuck inside a Barney head.

That’s exactly what happened to 15-year-old Darby Risner of Trussville, Alabama, when the teen tried on a giant Barney head found in a friend’s house.

Darby told ABC News that she tried to scare her friends with the Barney head when they came downstairs until the head wouldn’t come off. Darby describes sitting down and feeling the head lower down onto her, literally giving her “short little Barney arms.”

“All the girls started trying to pull it off, but it wasn’t budging,” Risner said. “I started getting a little claustrophobic and felt like it was kind of closing in.”

At one point, her friends rubbed vaseline over her arms, but the Barney head still wouldn’t come off.

One of the friends called her boyfriend at the Trussville Fire Department, but since her mom didn’t want to alarm the whole neighborhood, she drove her daughter to the fire station instead.

“Soon enough, we saw a group of young girls waddling with one who had a Barney head stuck on her,” said Trussville Fire Department Lt. Vince Bruno.

Bruno told ABC News he had never seen anything like this in his 33-year career at the fire department.

He explained that he and a few other firefighters tried to pull off the head, but it wasn’t budging. So they made a few release cuts in the head made of fiberglass, and they were then able to slide it right off.

Darby’s mom, Audrey Shannon only learned about her daughter’s adventure a few days ago, saying, “When my girlfriend told me, ‘So did you hear about Darby’s little adventure?’ I was a little worried at first,” Shannon said. “But then when I found out it was all about the Barney head, I laughed so hard. All the mascara ran off my face.”

Children In Germany Attend School Outdoors In Unique ‘Forest Kindergarten’

Sitting still in class is something that many young children struggle with.

They can’t pay attention, they’re disruptive, and in some cases, they need to be removed. In fact, the attention deficit issue has gotten so bad, many children are prescribed strong drugs like Ritalin and Adderall, strong amphetamines that force children to sit still.

[waldkindergarten]
[waldkindergarten]
But what if children were allowed to explore their environments? What if they were encouraged to yell, jump, scream, and climb trees whenever they wanted? What if nap time was in the shade of a tree and the children had to learn boundaries on their own, not because a teacher told them to?

waldkindergarten3
[waldkindergarten]
How would a school like this shape the country they live in? Well, I don’t have an answer for you right now, but check back in twenty years because the children currently attending a ‘forest kindergarten’ in Germany will be all grown up by that point.

[waldkindergarten]
[waldkindergarten]
It’s an unconventional method, but it might just be the next best thing. Parents who have children with ADHD, would a school like this benefit your kids or is this simply too much time spent outdoors?

The wedding day is easily one of the most important days in a person’s life, which is why brides and grooms invite their closest friends and family to be a part of the special day.

When one bride agreed to marry the love of her life, her first thought was how she couldn’t wait to share the big day with all of her loved ones, but was devastated when she realized her best friend and big brother, Daniel, wouldn’t be able to make it home from deployment for the wedding.

While most brides spend the night before their wedding with their bridesmaids making sure every last detail is in order, Sarah cried in her mother’s lap since she couldn’t imagine getting married without her brother by her side.

At the very last minute, however, Daniel found out that his request for 24-hour leave was approved, and got on the first flight home to surprise his sister.

With mom’s help, Daniel snuck up on Sarah during her wedding photo session, and as they expected, she instantly burst into tears when she spotted her Marine brother walking across the grass.

Pedals, The Bi-Pedal Bear, Can Only Walk Upright

Pedals is an injured black bear who was last seen roaming around West Milford in December.

He got his nickname Pedals because he is a bipedal bear, who is forced to walk upright due to missing one front paw and the other that is injured. But just yesterday, New Jersey resident Joey Esposito captured Pedals walking near his home on his two hind legs.

Last fall, a GoFundMe page raised nearly $28,000 to relocate Pedals, but the Division of Fish and Wildlife refused to permit the bear to be captured and transferred to the facility.

Lawrence Hajna, a spokesman for the Division of Fish of Wildlife, said he believes the black bear will do better in his natural habitat, and only if his condition deteriorates will the agency step it.

Hajna continued, “The bear has an indomitable spirit.”

Life-Saving Swim Safety Rules Every Parent Needs To Follow This Summer

Summer vacation is all about having fun in the sun with our little ones, while doing our very best to chill out and beat the heat.

Unfortunately, the most active and exciting time of year for the family can often be the most dangerous. This is especially true when little ones are getting wet and wild, no matter if your favorite place to cool off is the pool, lake, or ocean.

Don’t rely solely on lifeguards and let your kid be another statistic in swimming-related deaths. Here are the top 5 rules every parent or sitter needs to follow to keep kids safe in and around the water:

Invest in swim lessons.

[Shutterstock]
[Shutterstock]
It’s no wonder why more and more parents are starting their babies in swim lessons as tiny newborns. It’s not just a great way to bond with your child, learning to swim properly is your kid’s best defense against drowning.

Keep your eyes on kids at all times!

[Shutterstock]
[Shutterstock]
Even water babies like these ones who have a natural knack for swimming need constant supervision in and around the water. Looking away for just a minute can feel harmless and safe, but don’t be mistaken, as the results can be deadly. It only takes about 20 seconds for a person to drown, even in the shallow end or baby pool.

…And put down your phone, book, magazine.

[Shutterstock]
[Shutterstock]
Sure, there’s not much more relaxing than burying your nose in a good story under an umbrella but since most people aren’t able to shout for help while drowning, it’s important to always watch the water. When your kids are swimming, make a conscious effort to put your phone away and only use it in case of an emergency. Plus, as you can read here, the more time you spend on your cell phone, the more it affects kids in a negative way.

Give your kids pool noodles and floating devices…

[Shutterstock]
[Shutterstock]
But not for safety reasons! Kids can easily get stuck upside down in an inner tube, and although noodles and water wings can help little ones who don’t swim well, they should never be used as a first defense against drowning.

Don’t rely solely on lifeguards.

[Shutterstock]
[Shutterstock]
With a very uneven ratio of lifeguards to swimmers at most beaches, pools, and lakes, these professionals can only do so much. As you can see in this shocking rescue video, lifeguards definitely have their work cut out for them and every parent should be watching their own child while swimming. For parties, it never hurts to hire an extra lifeguard or better yet, you can stay alert and aware, ready to jump in at the first sign of trouble.

Play by the rules.

[Shutterstock]
[Shutterstock]
When it comes to most protected swimming areas, there are usually a lot more things you can’t do than things you can…and it’s all for good reason! Rules like no running, no diving, no pushing, no jumping, no glass, no child left unattended all need to be followed to keep your and other parents’ kids safe in and around the water. Make sure your kids know and follow the rules of the water, and make sure you’re being a good example for them every time you swim.

Learn CPR so YOU can save your child.

[Shutterstock]
[Shutterstock]

This story about a heroic nurse and mother saving her own child is the perfect example of why every parent should learn CPR. You’re never too young or too old to help save a person’s life, whether they be a family member or complete stranger. Know the signs of choking and drowning, so you can’t act long before emergency services arrive.

Simple DIY Trick Saved Family From Tragedy During July 4th Fireworks Show

Summer is a fun time for parents and kids alike…though mostly for kids, as it puts extra stress on Mom and Dad.

With all the water parks, street fairs, and carnivals it’s easy to lose your little one in a crowd. That’s what happened to Mike and Sarah Schuester* when they took their little ones to a firework show at their local high school.

Dad was taking one of the twins to the bathroom while Mom was catching up with a neighbor. Sarah held Ginny’s hand tightly as she gossiped with the neighbor about the rumored new kindergarten teacher and the dissatisfaction parents already had with him. In fact, she was so caught up in the gossip, she didn’t realize Ginny had let go, and started wandering after a puppy in the crowd.

“Where’s Ginny,” Mike asked as he came back from the bathroom, unaware of the toilet paper stuck to the bottom of his white Nike New Balance sneakers.

“What?” Sarah said, still hold the hand of the other twin, but looking around for Ginny.

“Ginny,” Sarah said loud enough to be heard over the background din. “Ginny–Ginny, where’d you go?” Sarah’s voice was rising higher and higher in pitch with each reiteration of her first-born’s name, but Ginny and her red dress were nowhere to be seen.

Sarah frantically started rushing through the crowd, looking at all the small frames lingering below her and distracted by event hint of red, though none were Ginny.

Mike and Sarah were in a raging panic when 20 minutes had gone by and they still hadn’t found Ginny. They were practically dragging the twins by their wrists, unaware of the protests the two made. Security was looking for Ginny and nearly everybody in the crowd had felt a ripple pass through the arena that something was wrong.

Sarah doubled back to the food trucks for a third time, wondering if Ginny had wandered this way looking for ice cream or distracted by the flashing lights. Still frantic, she placed a hand on her sweaty head and that’s when she felt her phone vibrating in her back pocket.

“Yes, hello?!” Sarah said to the number she didn’t recognize as relief dawned over her.

“Hi is this Sarah?” a young man’s voice asked.

“Yes–yes, this is she.” she said out of breath with clipped words.

“Hi I uh, I think I found your daughter. She has a message written on her arm that says ‘if lost please call Sarah’ and then this number. I’ve been trying to call for the past twenty minutes, but nobody has been answering.”

Sarah looked down at the twins, seeing the ink written under each of her other two kids’ wrists. In her frantic haste, both she and Mike had completely forgotten the trick they had picked up online. They had written Sarah’s phone number on the wrist of their kids and covered it with a liquid bandaid to keep the ink from smudging.

[Cherise McClimans]
[Cherise McClimans]

“Yes, thank you,” Sarah said with relief sweeping through her body. “Where are you? Don’t move, I’ll be there in a minute.”

Mom Defends 6-Year-Old’s Right To Be Himself

After her son got teased at school for wearing nail polish, mom pens a powerful defense of why he should be accepted.

Pennsylvania mom, Devon Berryann writes in a Facebook post:

“My six year old son likes to wear nail polish. He likes to wear girls’ clothes and tutus. He tells me about the boys he likes at school,” Berryann said.

“Maybe he will outgrow it. Maybe not. I love and accept him for who he is. I always thought that doing that would protect him from the pain of hurtful words and bullies, and I didn’t worry,” she continued.

Berryann describes being shocked and heartbroken when she found out her son was being teased for wearing nail polish at school. “For the first time ever I considered talking him into taking it off. Into hiding that part of himself,” she said. “Because for the first time ever I was scared that he would be gunned down one night when he was out having a good time with his friends.”

But, then Berryann remembered all the reasons why she lets her son be who he is. “Because it makes him happy. Because nothing hurts more than seeing your child truly sad. Because pretending to be someone you’re not to please other people only leads to self-loathing. To depression and to suicide. And that too made me afraid,” Berryann writes.

Then, her most powerful thought yet- “As scared as I am, I know that this world is not going to change with more fear.”

So she bought her son more nail polish, and even an adorable tutu to match. She posted his photo on Facebook with her inspiring message, and it’s already been shared over 21,000 times. The outpour of love and support from people proved that her loving son will be accepted.

Homeless Teen Becomes Prom Queen And Gets A Full Ride To College

Here’s a story proving you can never really judge a person from what you see on the outside.

Although 16-year-old Destyni Tyree looks like your average high school student, she is far from it. Tyree’s school voted her prom queen in 2016 and she is captain of her cheerleading squad. On top of that, Destyni was able to complete all four years of high school in just two years, scoring a 4.0 grade point average.

“Accomplished,” the teen told ABC News of when she heard she received a full-ride scholarship to Potomac State College of West Virginia University on top of all her success. “That’s how I feel right now.”

At first glance, Destyni Tyree seems like she has what every teen girl could ever dream of, but when she leaves school each day, her life is far from perfect. Growing up in Washington, D.C., Tyree had a difficult home life, with fighting and unsafe living conditions being the norm. A few years ago when Tyree’s mother lost her job, her family was forced to join more than 240 others in one of the worst homeless shelters in the city.

“At first, I didn’t like it because I was used to my own space,” Tyree said of notorious D.C. General shelter, the largest in the city. Eventually, difficulty outside of school poured into her academia. “I had a lot of issues with classmates and teachers,” Tyree told ABC News of how she had to change schools numerous times over the years. “It was just too much.”

Finally, Tyree ended up at alternative program Roosevelt S.T.A.Y. High School, where she learned to manage her time in order to succeed.

“She is a joy to be around, she has a good heart,” principal Eugenia Young told ABC News of her student, adding that she is a born leader.

Tyree began working tirelessly to succeed in school, even coming in on Saturdays, on top of working 25 weeks at an ice cream parlor, according to ABC News. She launched the school’s first cheerleading squad, organized a senior trip, and even spearheaded the senior prom.

[ABC News]
[ABC News]
“The more and more she’s around people who constantly tell her how smart she is, and how she can do anything she puts her mind to, the more she believes she can do anything now,” Young said.

Now Tyree, who wants to give back and become a principal herself someday, is ready to start her new chapter in life, starting Potomac State College of West Virginia University in August.

[ABC News]
[ABC News]
“We’re not a statistic and we’re not all the same,” Tyree said. “It gets better. If you work hard enough, if you have that drive, if you have that motivation, it gets a lot better.”

Mom Urges Parents To Vaccinate Kids After Newborn Gets Whooping Cough

Annie Mae Braiden gave birth to her daughter Isabelle about 10 weeks ago, and everything should have been normal.

Unfortunately, Isabelle has spent the past month in the pediatric intensive care unit in a Victoria (British Columbia) hospital because she picked up whooping cough. Braiden is speaking out since she believes her daughter’s illness could have been prevented had other parents vaccinated their children. While Isabelle is too young to be vaccinated, mom believes that other children should have gotten their shots, because now Isabelle is the one who’s suffering.

In a Facebook post, Braiden urges other parents to make sure their kids get vaccinated, and not only for them but for the infants that are too young to receive vaccinations.

“What you do with your kids is your choice, but do not tell me that not vaccinating your kids isn’t hurting anyone but your own kids,” Braiden writes.

Dr. Jeff Bishop, a pediatrician who is treating Isabelle at Victoria General Hospital, said whooping cough is incredibly infectious and spreads easily through contact with anyone who is inadequately vaccinated. He said that he has noticed more children being treated with whooping cough in the past year, than ever before. “A small number of children have died during the past five years,” Dr. Bishop told the National Post.

“These are diseases that kill children and we’re lucky that in Canada we see them very rarely,” Dr. Bishop continues. “But we’re seeing them come back. We’re seeing measles, we’re seeing babies die from whooping cough where previously we weren’t.”

Does this mom’s post make you think differently about vaccinating your children?

Every now and then, we can all use a little bit of encouragement, but this tiny cheerleader takes the act of good sportsmanship to completely unchartered territory!

When our little ones are young, positive reinforcement can often make all the difference. A little encouragement goes a long way, as you can see in this adorable story about some awesome dads on a big testing day, but we can’t help but laugh at what the toddler in the following video does.

Sure, dogs are rightfully known as man’s best friend and there’s usually no time they aren’t down for some friendly play, but everyone deserves a little privacy while going to the bathroom. Mom just couldn’t help but bust out the camera when she sees her little girl run over to her furry best friend and give him some reinforcement on getting the job done.

You just have to laugh at this one! Mom and Dad are surely going to get a kick out of showing her this when she’s older.

Adorable Kitten Struggles To Mimic Mom In Hilarious Video

Being a parent is often a game of monkey see, monkey do.

Children often see what we do and mimic that behavior, which is why it’s so important to teach our children to do the right thing with our actions.

Like my mother always says, “your actions speak so loud, I can’t hear your words.” My Mom, in her infinite maternal wisdom, knows that children mimic what they see of others, not what they hear. And all parents know how important it is to be a positive role model, because whether it’s something as simple as the way you tie your shoes or as complex as the way you react when you’re angry, children are always watching, mimicking, and learning.

And this rings true in the animal world too:

Take this kitten, for example, who watched how Mom bathes herself but struggles to mimic that behavior perfectly. The video is adorable but the underlying message strikes quite a chord.

If you connect with the message in this video and if you know how important it is to be a positive role model, then please SHARE with friends and family on Facebook. Let’s all be positive role models, not just to our own kids but to all kids in this world.

Photographer Peter Casteel has presented a project that makes us unable to help ourselves. We simply have to squeal with delight at the following photos.

Previously, Casteel presented his projects  “Underwater Dogs” and “Underwater Puppies,” which draw a lot of attention, as you can imagine. The two gave us the unique opportunity to look at our pets through a different lens.

Inspired by these cute ventures, the photographer took it to the next level: babies.

Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates in any group in nation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“The book is a celebration of babies, but there’s definitely a serious element to it,” Casteel told TODAY.com. “A big reason I wanted to make this book is to promote the cause of water safety for babies. I just want to let people know about the benefits of these classes and that they are something to strongly consider.”

So, Casteel attended a water safety class for babies and worked with 18 different swimming schools across 10 different states to both promote water safety and capture this adorable project.

The dedicated photographer captured approximately 750 babies, with 67 making it into the final product.

“I only had a limited window to really seize that moment in time because they can only go underwater just for a moment,” Casteel said. “I could only take four or five pictures really quickly. Maybe the baby turned or there were bubbles or the instructor got in the way. I was never frustrated because that’s the nature of it. You get what you get.”

Take a look at some of the best shots:

Back in 2013, you may have heard of Hunter Yelton, the 6-year-old from Colorado Springs who made headlines when he was accused of sexual harassment (yeah, you read that one correctly).

Here’s the back story…

The child had been distracting in class throughout the year. According to his mother, Jennifer Saunders, the family has been working with him on “class disruptions” by grounding him and giving him “big restrictions.”

Leading up to this incident, Hunter had recently gotten a ‘girlfriend.’ According to Hunter, he had previously kissed this girl on the cheek and on this occasion, kissed her on the hand too.

For school officials, this behavior was the final straw.

“Our main interest in this is having the behavior stop because the story is not just about the student that was disciplined, it is also about the student receiving the unwanted advances,” Robin Gooldy, the superintendent of Cañon City Schools told HLN. “We have to think about both students in the situation.”

However, Mom was pissed that her child was named for carrying out such ludicrous accusations saying, “this is taking it to an extreme that doesn’t need to be met with a 6-year-old. Now my son’s asking questions, ‘What is sex, mommy?'”

And most parents will agree that 6-years-old is much too soon to be given the dreaded “talk.”

What do you make of this story? Was the school’s zero-tolerance policy too strict or were they simply looking out for the little girl? Likewise, is our culture teaching our children about relationships at too early of an age? After all, we think Kindergarten-aged puppy love is adorable, but should children this young have boyfriends and girlfriends?

We all know dogs are man’s best friend, but sometimes they are our heroes and saviors too.

Take, for example, Bretagne (pronounced Brittany), who was the last surviving Ground Zero rescue dog. The Golden Retriever was two years old when she and her handler, Denise Corliss, were part of the Texas Task Force 1 sent to the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan after the terrorist attack brought down the buildings on September 11, 2001.

With Bretagne’s passing, that legacy has passed with her but her memory will live on.

We still have heroic canines among us, but none who were present at 9/11. Bretagne was given a hero’s salute as she made her way into the veterinary clinic.

She would have been 17-years-old in August and while her body may have passed, her spirit will live on with those she assisted on that fateful day.

If your heart aches with love for the incredible Ground Zero rescue dogs and all service dogs, then PLEASE SHARE this story of love and friendship with friends of your own.

Soon-to-be Mom Nicole Kim has received a big thumbs up from her unborn baby.

T the expectant mother has quite literally gotten a sign of affirmation from her child. At a routine 20-week ultrasound that occurred in February, Mom’s technician snapped photos of the fetus before stumbling upon a quirk she doesn’t come across every day.

“Look, the baby is giving you the thumbs-up,” the technician said, as she zoomed in and quickly took an image of the hand gesture, according to local news source Calgary Sun.

Kim and her husband burst out laughing when they saw how socially savvy their unborn child already was. The baby was delivered this month but s/he already knows how to be cool.

The parents got a serious kick out of their kid. “I just thought it was the neatest thing. We just couldn’t stop smiling,” said Kim.

Mom Serves Son Two Cups Of Coffee A Day To Treat ADHD

When you become a parent, you have to pick up a lot of strange and unusual tricks to cure ailments.

However, one Mom found an answer to a very serious problem in a place we don’t typically look to for such answers.

Christie Haskell’s 7-year-old son Rowan hasn’t been diagnosed with ADHD, but she believes it’s the only possibly explanation. Her method of dealing with his undiagnosed disease? Coffee…two cups a day for her second grader.

Haskell says while coffee might give us the jitters, it actually calms down her son and makes his behavior more stable. However, doctors warn this method has no proof of being healthy or successful, and they encourage parents to avoid this approach.

However, those same doctors may be quick to prescribe strong drugs like Ritalin and Adderal, which many parents like Haskell do not want their children drugged up with.

So, Haskell follows the unorthodox remedy she’s found on all the “Mommy Blogs” and doses her boy with caffiene on the daily.

Take a look at the video below and don’t forget to SHARE your opinion with us in the comments (because we know you’ll have one). Likewise, pass this story along to a parent in your life if you think they’ll have an opinion too.
