Teen Walks At Graduation Weeks After Breaking Neck

Most high school seniors spend the last few weeks of their senior year celebrating with friends and preparing for graduation, however, one Missouri teen was forced to spend those final few weeks in the ICU and physical therapy after a tragic accident.

Just weeks before Lindbergh High School’s graduation, Brad Bauer was on a trip to Mexico with friends when he dove into a wave and broke his neck on a sandbar. Bauer injured his C4 and C5 vertebrae and was in the ICU, yet he decided he was not only going to walk again but he was going to walk at his graduation.

“From Day 1, he always had a little bit of stubbornness and determination,” mom, Laura Bauer, said. “It was rough at first. We all thought, ‘Maybe he’ll come back,’”  the water polo coach, Andy Butler, said about the former team captain. “We gave him the strength to recover and he gave us the strength to get through it.”

Once out of the ICU, Bauer started physical therapy. And despite the odds, Bauer got up on stage on his graduation day with some help from a friend and managed to walk on his own two feet to get his diploma. “It was pretty rough,” said Bauer, who didn’t notice that everyone in the crowd stood up and gave him a standing ovation. “I was just focusing on my feet. I didn’t have a chance to look around.”

“I was speechless. There was so much emotion and pride, determination and attitude. All the support has been amazing,” Laura said.

One Iowa dad’s four children love to help him when he does small projects around the house, but now they’re being hailed heroes for what they did during a recent project at their grandmother’s home.

“We had it almost all of the way torn down. We were just waiting for it to fall the rest of the way,” Gannaway said. As a precaution, Gannaway gave his phone to his oldest son, 13-year-old Ethan, and told him to call 911 if anything bad happened to him while knocking the last bit of the shed down.

“It came down like it was supposed to, but then it flipped over sideways and knocked me out and pinned me underneath it,” Gannaway said about the roof, which knocked him unconscious as it crushed him to the ground. Ethan immediately called 911, but they knew they had to do more to save their dad. “He’s gasping for air. I must save him,” 9-year-old Addison said.

“Nothing is impossible if we set our minds to it and work together,” said Ethan. “My sister was right here, lifting up right here, and I was here pulling on this trying to get him out,” said Addison, who dragged her dad out despite recently injuring her arm playing softball. “I think the adrenaline kicked in because the roof is several hundred pounds,” Gannaway said.

“I’m amazingly proud,” said Gannaway, who was rushed to the hospital and treated for a broken sholder and several scrapes. “They did everything, everything so perfect. It means the world to me that they would jump in and do whatever they could to save me.”

Firefighters Save Dog Buried Under Deck

When one Virginia family’s dog went missing, they looked for him everywhere, but after 48 hours without any sign of their 60-pound Pointer, they decided to call the fire department for some help.

The family thought they heard a faint cry from underneath the deck in their backyard, however, when crews arrived to investigate, they thought it was impossible that their dog, Banx, was trapped underneath since there was only a three-inch gap between the ground and the deck.

Photo by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department

“The deck was less than 3 inches off the ground with gravel placed to the base of the deck. Crews conducted a thorough search for the dog but there was no evidence of the dog or of any gravel being disturbed under the deck,” Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department said. The crews searched the rest of the home and property, but there was no sign of Banx anywhere. Firefighters started carefully removing some of the decking but still found no trace of the dog.

Photo by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department

“After some additional time passed searching the area, the homeowner and one of the firefighters heard a small whine from under the house. Crews immediately went to work removing additional deck boards to gain access to the foundation… Firefighters began to remove some of the gravel under the slab of the home to see if there was a pocket that the dog may have crawled into. After several buckets of gravel were removed the dog’s tail and then foot could be felt. They eventually were able to remove enough gravel to get food and water to the dog while continuing to clear more gravel and dirt.”

Photo by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department

The crew carefully dug under the foundation and eventually freed Banx. “He emerged dehydrated and a little bruised but in good shape despite the lengthy entrapment. Firefighters could only surmise that the dog went after a small animal that hid under the deck. The dog was then wedged and continued to push and dig trying to get free. In doing so he only went further under the home and the gravel he was moving was pushed behind him thus blocking any evidence of his location and his only means of escape.”

When a homeless man was pushed onto the tracks of a New York City subway this past weekend, everyone on the platform stood around waiting for someone else to save him.

31-year-old Gray Davis, a dancer with the American Ballet Theater, who was heading home with his wife, Cassandra Trenary, and mother and watching his wife perform at the Metropolitan Opera House on Saturday night, when they witnessed a man and women fighting violently on the opposite platform.

“As we watched a man and woman on the opposite platform punching each other, Cassandra made Gray go look for security..all of a sudden the woman threw the man onto the train tracks, while a train was due any minute. We were all horrified about what was about to happen as the man lay unresponsive on that track,” Gray’s mother, Janie Krabbe B. LeTourneau, wrote in a post to Facebook.

“At first I waited for somebody else to jump down there. People were screaming to get help. But nobody jumped down. So I jumped down,” said Gray. Thanks to his ballet training, Gray easily lifted the unconscious man up onto the platform as he heard a train coming. “He then lifted himself up miraculously just before the train got there. People started cheering and yelling ‘you are a hero’,” LeTourneau wrote. “I never realized how high it was,” Gray said. “Luckily, I’m a ballet dancer, so I swung my leg up.”

“It was really scary. I don’t know if I had time to process it until I saw my wife coming down crying — then I realized it was scary,” Gray said. “My son has always made me proud, but I’ve never been as proud of him as I was tonight, out of 2 full platforms of people, he was the only person brave enough to jump down and save that man’s life. This certainly is a day I will never forget in more ways than one,” LeTourneau said.

Warning: The following video contains footage that may be upsetting to some viewers.

A disturbing video has emerged of a teen forcefully swinging a puppy around by its neck. The video, which was posted on social media, shows the girl swinging the white puppy by the neck with a leash.

The dazed puppy is shown crouching on the floor after landing back on its feet and appears to be very distraught. The girl continues to swing the poor puppy in circles, and it is unclear as to why she is doing this, but we can guess it’s out of sheer ignorance. The girl laughs while she’s swinging the dog and so does the person filming the video.

The RSPCA has instigated an investigation into the situation and the video has since been removed by Facebook. It is believed that the girl in the video is a 14-year-old teenager from the Devon town of Bovey Tracey.

According to the Daily Mail, before the video was taken down, hundreds of people left comments venting their fury at the girl. One commenter wrote: “How evil. The dog should be taken away.” Another posted: “That is so mean.”

A spokesman for the RSPCA said: “We have been made aware of footage circulating on social media showing a dog being swung around by its collar and lead and are investigating. We would urge anyone with further information to contact us on 0300 123 4999.”

Under no circumstances is it ok for anyone to treat an animal in this way, and we hope that this girl receives the punishment she deserves.

Abandoned Dog Was So Matted His Leg Stuck To His Ear

A 6-year-old Lhasa Apso was abandoned by a heartless owner and was left to wander the streets of Leeds alone.

According to the Daily Mail, when dog warden, Harriet Chaplin learned about the homeless less, she alerted the RSPCA saying, “The dog was matted like no dog I had ever seen before. The mats were so bad they were pulling his skin off around the eye and his front leg was matted to his ear.”

Credit: RSPCA

“I believe he was either dumped in this area or has come from a home nearby as I don’t think he could have wandered far in his state,” Chaplin continued.

Chaplin named the dog Soldier, and he was transferred to Dogs Trust Leeds, where rescuers began the difficult task of getting rid of his extremely matted fur, which caused him to live an uncomfortable life.

Having not been groomed for several months, staff at Dogs Trust Leeds had to anesthetize him to cut away his coat so Soldier wouldn’t experience any further pain.

Amanda Sands, Manager of Dogs Trust, has been rescuing animals for nearly 30 years and says she’s never seen anything so horrific and heartbreaking. “We really didn’t know if he was going to make it but we are relieved to say he has started to eat and we are hoping that he will continue to improve, but it is very early days,” Amanda said.

Soldier is now being cared for by a foster family, anyone who recognizes the dog is encouraged to contact 0300.123.8018.

A tiny puppy was brought to into South Carolina shelter as a stray and upon his arrival, he could not stand or walk.

Rescue organization, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC were immediately notified of the puppy’s condition and they sprung into action trying to help him. Naming him Jeremy, rescuers took the dog and brought him to the organization’s emergency veterinary hospital, where co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC said, “Our hearts are breaking for Jeremy.”

Credit: Rescue Dogs Rock NYC

“He looks like he is made of stone with those sad eyes peering out begging for help. They got a central line in, and he’s getting albumen (protein) and blood transfusions along with dextrose. His body temp is low again. He did not deserve this,” she continued.

Jeremy’s red blood count was extremely low and his body temperature was high, but even with blood transfusions, his blood count remained constant. In addition, Jeremy’s skin was so damaged from mange and dehydration, that it was nearly impossible to insert a catheter into his leg.

Rescuers made the decision to rush Jeremy to a specialty hospital, where a central line had to be inserted and they hoped the puppy would survive the ordeal. “Jeremy survived the night which is a win,” Jackie posted on Rescue Dogs Rock NYC’s Facebook page.

“We learned late yesterday that he has a brother at the same shelter; also with mange but in much better shape. Joshua is on the way to the same vet, and we hope and pray seeing his brother will give Jeremy the perk up he desperately needs,” she continued.

When Joshua arrived at the veterinary’s office, he quickly ran over to his brother to comfort him, and their reunion melted everyone’s hearts. It brought tears to the eyes of staff as Joshua nuzzled his sick brother, giving him the love he needed to keep fighting for his life.

Rescue Dogs Rock NYC is continuing to care for Jeremy and they are posting regular updates on his condition on their Facebook page.

When one Texas soldier was deployed to Afghanistan, his wife couldn’t wait for him to come home. However, when he did finally return, he wasn’t the same person that he was prior to his deployment.

“He just shut down, mentally [and] physically,” Kerrin Raybon said about her husband, Army Airborne Specialist McLean Raybon, who struggled to acclimate to civilian life after his deployment in Afghanistan left him with PTSD. “He was there, but he wasn’t there. Just to get him to go anywhere was a struggle.”

McLean barely left his home for about three years after returning home. And when forced to go on small outings to the grocery store, he would rush in and out as quickly as possible. “[I was] scared to go out in public, not really wanting to do anything,” McLean said.

So when McLean and Kerrin found out that K9 for Warriors had approved their application for a service dog, they were thrilled since McLean’s medications made him feel like a ‘zombie’. “They called it a new leash on life,” he said. “I was looking for a second chance. I was lucky as hell.”

The minute McLean met his chocolate-colored lab named Merrick this past January, he instantly felt calmer and comfortable enough to leave his house again. “I don’t have to worry about watching my own back. He’s got me,” McLean said about Merrick, who is even trained to wake him up before he has a night terror. “Merrick brings the happiness out in McLean, the person I knew that he was prior,” Kerrin said.

Inmates Rescue Guard That Passed Out While On Duty

Prison inmates are rarely referred to as heroic, but one Georgia sheriff has hailed six prison inmates as heroes, for what they did for a correction officer when he collapsed on the job.

The six inmates had been taken to a local prison to weed and clean the grounds as part of a work detail trip, but it was so hot and humid outside that their guard collapsed and stopped breathing while they were working. The inmates knew they easily could have run away, but knew the guard needed their help.

The inmates worked together to turn the guard onto his back, removed his gun belt and bulletproof vest, start CPR, and called 911. When he started breathing, it was just real heavy and real fast,” inmate Greg Williams said., shortly after, paramedics arrived and helped revive him.

“We all know that Monday could have ended differently for our officer,” Polk County Sheriff Johnny Moats said. “They really stepped up in a time of crisis and showed that they care about my officers. That really speaks a lot about my officers, too, [and] how they treat these inmates. They treat them like people. Like family.”

“It wasn’t about who is in jail and who wasn’t,” Williams said. It was about a man going down and we had to help him.”

Dogs might be ‘man’s best friend’, but they typically don’t like anyone who enters their owner’s property unannounced, which is why they normally don’t get along with mail carriers.

So when one Athens, Louisiana woman saw the neighborhood UPS driver sitting in her driveway petting her three dogs and taking a selfie with them, she grabbed her camera and started filming the refreshingly sweet interaction between the two historic ‘enemies’.

“Doniel is incredibly well known in our area, he is always extremely happy, caring, courteous, and the most kind-hearted man,” owner Staci Burns said about her UPS driver, Doniel Kidd. Burns shared the sweet moment on Facebook, and the video quickly went viral with over 1.4 million views.

However, Staci explained that this isn’t the first time Kidd had gone above and beyond for her dogs. While driving on his regular route one day, Kidd noticed Staci’s dog, Reba, sitting on the side of the road. “We live in the country and she went through a phase of going off on adventures and also following me when I left without my knowledge,” Staci said. “Doniel saw her miles from home and pulled over to get her. Of course, she hopped right in and he delivered her home.”

“He asks about her if he doesn’t see her,” Burns said. “She loves to jump up in the truck and beg him to take her with him.”

Adult Elephants Rescue Drowning Baby

Animals in captivity typically don’t have to worry about any harm coming to their young, but when two adult elephants realized a calf in their enclosure was moments away from dying, they knew exactly what to do.

A baby elephant at the Grand Park Zoo in Seoul, South Korea recently learned the hard way why it’s not a good idea to play next to a deep body of water. The months-old calf had been playing beside one of the adult elephants near the edge of the enclosure’s pool just before it accidentally tripped over the edge.

The zoo’s security cameras captured the intense moment when the terrified baby fought to keep its head and trunk out of the water, as the adult closest watched helplessly from the edge. Moments later, another adult nearby rushed over and tried to reach the baby with its trunk.

Since the baby was too far to reach, the quick-thinking adults then charged into the pond and pushed the baby up against the wall. They then used both their trunks to lead the distressed calf to the shallow end of the pool. The CCTV footage, which the zoo shared on social media, then shows the shaken baby walk out of the water to dry land on its own.

IED detection dogs rely on their sense of smell to find roadside bombs and keep their human partners alive. But one former IED detection dog depends on his sense of smell now more than ever since he lost his vision.

In May 2010, David Herrera was assigned to a 2-year-old IED detection dog named Kash. After training together in South Carolina, they were deployed to Afghanistan and were responsible for clearing bombs from the roads. “We’re in clearance, so our main job is to make sure there’s no bombs in the roads,” said David, who credits Kash for saving his life and the lives of his fellow soldiers on multiple occasions.

Yet when they returned home in 2011, Kash was paired with a new handler. “I haven’t seen him since we came back from Afghanistan in May 2011…” David said. So when he found out Kash was retired and had been adopted by another handler in Texas, he reached out and asked if he could visit.

“He came up to me and started rubbing his head against me,” David said. “At first, he was looked a little hesitant, but it made sense. He was trying to smell who was there, and once he knew it was me, he was so excited. I didn’t even know he was blind until afterwards.”

“I’m just glad I got to see him again after so long,” David said. “We had so many great times out there.”

Most kids would be thrilled to have an excuse to miss school, however, for one Texas 9-year-old, going to school and seeing his friends was all he wanted to do after an illness kept him out of school for months.

Last year, dad Billie Lewis and mom Lekesha Lewish noticed their son Elijah was more tired than normal during winter vacation, and decided to take him to the hospital after a friend’s mom, who is an oncology nurse, told them he needed to see a doctor. “I left home thinking we’re going to the emergency room and we’re going to get prescribed some antibiotics and we’ll go home,” Lakesha said. “We just left an hour ago thinking everything was fine, and then I’m calling my husband over the phone, telling him our kid has cancer.”

Elijah was diagnosed with leukemia and started chemotherapy treatment immediately, which weakened his immune system and forced him to stay out of school for five long months. “He just misses being able to interact with other kids,” Lakesha said. “He enjoyed learning things and coming home and being able to say, ‘This is what I learned today.’”

However, after months of treatment, Elijah is in remission and although he still needs four more years of chemotherapy, he’ll be able to go back to school. And when his classmates found out the exciting news, they decided to plan a surprise ninth birthday party his first day back.

“He just couldn’t believe it was happening because he was away for five months,” Lakesha said about Elijah, who started to cry when he saw what his classmates did for him. “They had gifts for him, they had birthday stickers, cards for him hanging on the wall, shirts signed for him from the entire third grade class. I don’t think he knew it was going to be this big surprise birthday party.”

When one Florida wife found out that her soldier husband, who had been stationed in Germany, was going to be back in time for his father’s 67th birthday, she immediately started planning a surprise.

Courtney Adams knows how close her husband Chris is with his dad Joe, so when she found out Chris would be returning from Germany just in time for Joe’s birthday, she reached out to a local Texas Roadhouse for help making the surprise homecoming a moment neither would ever forget.

“I called them today and told them my husband was coming home from Germany today to surprise his dad for his Birthday. I needed a table for 12 at 6pm (Texas doesn’t take reservations) they told me they would LOVE to help us out with that. Not only did they reserve us a table, they closed all the blinds so Daddy couldn’t see if we happen to walk by the wrong window,” Courtney said.

However, the surprise was nearly ruined when Chris’ flight was delayed and then they got a flat tire on their way to the restaurant. Eventually, Courtney and Chris made it to the restaurant and all the hard work paid off when they saw Joe’s face. “He broke down into tears,” Courtney said. “It was pretty emotional. His dad just grabbed onto him and didn’t want to let go.”

The restaurant manager personally filmed the special moment and then surprised the family with two cakes, one for Joe’s birthday and another for Chris’ homecoming, and then told them that their meal was on the house. “They said, ‘We here at Texas Roadhouse appreciate everything you do for our country and we value our military members, so we wanted to let you know dinner was on us,” Courtney explained. “I was in tears, especially after the crazy evening we had.”

On May 22, one Florida police officer responded to a call about a drowning child. However, when he got to the scene, he realized the situation was a little more complicated than he imagined since no one could even get to the boy.

Once Lake Placid Officer David Rhoden and other first responders arrived at the scene, they realized the boy was not only in danger of drowning but was also trapped underneath a dock at Lake June after getting stuck between two barrels while swimming underneath the dock with friends.

Photo by Lake Placid Police Department

“We rushed into the water,” Rhoden said. “I could see the child pinned between under the dock. He had a sheer look of terror on his face. I started to remove my gear because I could see his head was above water. He was breathing and crying.” Rhoden and volunteer firefighter Rafael Ramos worked together and were able to pull the young boy out before it was too late.

Photo by Lake Placid Police Department

The boy, who Rhoden believes is nine years old, was shaken from the accident but thankfully unharmed. “Usually we go to fatalities and people aren’t able to walk away. It was very nice to have a good outcome. I’m glad that I was a part of it and the boy was okay,” Rhoden said.

Kids Raise $11,000 So Sick Teacher Can Fulfill Bucket List

In January 2015, one Texas junior high teacher discovered she had cancer. She hoped she would be able to fight it, but doctors explained that it was terminal and gave her just two to five years to live.

About a month after Michelle Wistrand, a language arts teacher at Tomball Junior High, found out she had leiomyosarcoma, cancer of the soft muscle tissue, she decided it was time to tell her students the tragic news. “That’s when I told them that I had about two to five years at that time,” Wistrand said. “It got pretty quiet. They were crying and I was crying and that’s when I switched to my bucket list.”

Rather than waste the rest of her time focusing on the negative, Wistrand explained to her students that with her time left, she hoped to cross off some items on her bucket list like swim in the Pacific Ocean and see the redwoods in California if she could afford it.

One of her students, 14-year-old Mickey Nolan, desperately wanted to help Wistrand so started a GoFundMe page called “Together We Can Wistrand Anything” to help raise money so she could afford to fulfill her bucket list. “We donated the first $50 and it was Mickey’s idea and that’s the kind of kid he is,” Nolen’s mom Cindy said. “He is a self-starter and a compassionate, kind kid, and I am just so proud of him.”

So far, they have raised more than $11,700 through the GoFundMe campaign and a t-shirt sale and surprised Wistrand with the incredible gift, which will allow her to take a trip with her family this summer, travel to Michigan in the fall, and then visit her son in Iowa in the winter. “I cried and cried,” Wistrand said. “I feel blessed and I am just so thankful to have them in my life. I could not have taken these trips, there’s no way. They blow me away with their kindness.”

“I want to learn to play the cello,” the 55-year-old added. “I want to go to be with the people that I love and spend as much time with them as I possibly can.”

Police don’t’ normally recommend people jump into a moving car, but Illinois police are praising a man who did just that since it may have saved lives.

Recently, Randy Tompkins was driving his truck when he noticed a car swerving in and out of oncoming traffic, and realized the driver was having a medical emergency. A Dixon police officer was right behind the car, but Tompkins saw an opportunity to help and selflessly decided to save the total stranger before it was too late.

“It was crazy I saw him coming at me so I backed up real fast to the side and jumped out and jumped in his car to stop it wow my adrenaline is still going,” Tompkins said in a post to Facebook after he bravely rescued a man seizing up while driving. “I jumped in his car he was having a seizure at the wheel.”

“The driver of the truck (later identified as Dixon resident Randy Tompkins) exited his vehicle, ran up to the car and without hesitation jumped into the car through the passenger side window in an attempt to stop it,” said Dixon Police, who, at the time, couldn’t tell what was happening to the driver. “Tompkins was able to get the car in park just as officers approached the vehicle as well.”

Furious Mother Rewrites Her Daughter’s Sexist Homework

Lynne Polvino is getting praise from across the world on social media after she fixed what some are calling “sexist homework.”

The Huffington post reported that Polvino’s 6-year-old daughter’s homework, titled “Back to Work,” asked students to fill in a story about a girl named Lisa. The girl in the story is unhappy because her mom was going back to work when in the past she stayed home with her.

Upon reading her daughter’s  homework, Polvino told TODAY.com“My shock and dismay quickly turned to outrage. I mean, what decade are we in, anyway? In this day and age, we’re going to tell kids that mothers working outside the home makes their children and families unhappy? That fathers don’t normally do things like cook and wash the dishes?”

The original homework read: “Lisa was not happy. Her mother was back at work. Before Lisa was born, her mother worked in a big office. Yesterday, she told Lisa that she was going back to work. The morning was horrible…”

The revised homework read: “Lisa was happy. Her mother was back at work. Before Lisa was born, her mother worked in a big office. Because it valued her important contributions to the workplace, her employee offered nearly a year of paid maternity leave and flex time upon her return. The morning was wonderful…”

Since posting the revised homework to Facebook, most people praised Polvino for her edits, saying, “In a reasonable and sane world people won’t need to rewrite their children’s homework. Unfortunately, we don’t live in that world and this mother took the time to make some corrections. Way to go Lynne! And thank you from the rest of us hoping we’ll have a chance to see a better world.

What do you think about this mom’s revisions? Are you upset with the original homework the school gave out in the first place?

Family Reunited With Dog Kidnapped Two Years Ago

Dogs are not just pets, but sometimes beloved members of the family. So when one Long Island family’s dog was kidnapped from their backyard, they were devastated and did everything possible to find her.

The Di Bartolo family exhausted every option in order to find their dog named Cali, but as months passed without any sign of her, they started losing hope that they would ever be reunited. However, two years later, Cali was found in early April almost 200 miles away in New Jersey.

“She was skin and bones,” rescuer Anita Innamorata Stout said about the Ridgeless Rhodesian Ridgeback. “Unfortunately, you can tell she had been mistreated or on her own for a while. She was very sweet, she pretty much just let us do whatever we needed to do with her,” said veterinarian Dr. Mary Qwacz.

The vet found a chip in Cali and was able to find her original owners, who had since moved to North Carolina, and told them the news. “I just dropped to my knees and was in tears,” Brittney di Bartolo said. However, the news wasn’t all good. While treating Cali, the team discovered she had nasal cancer and had just a week left to live. “I told Anita, even if it’s for one hour, a day, 10 years, whatever it is, I want my dog back,” di Bartolo said.

Cali was given treatment for her cancer, and she responded incredibly well. Now, it’s expected she has about 18 more months to live. This past weekend, Cali was finally reunited with her family, and they all dropped to the ground in tears when they finally saw her again.

Watch the entire video below to see the touching moment this family is reunited with their beloved dog years after he was taken from them.

PTSD Service Dog Transforms Veteran’s Life
