When one 74-year-old Utah man found out that his wife had stage 5 kidney failure and urgently need a new kidney, he was prepared to do anything to help find her one.
After speaking with doctors, Wayne Winters found out that it could take three years on the waitlist to find a matching kidney for his wife, Deanne Winters. But after months passed with no luck, Winters could see his wife didn’t have much time left so he decided to take matters into his own hands.
Each day, Winters walked miles on the sides of busy roads wearing a sign asking for someone to donate a kidney. After a few weeks, his mission went viral and hundreds of people contacted him. “Between seven to 800 [calls], it filled my phone up,” he said. “I’m sitting here with this full phone.”
But before they took any of the kind strangers up on their offer, doctors called and said they found a perfect kidney from an organ donor that had passed away. “I was just so overwhelmed,” Winters said after two years on the waitlist. “I didn’t know what to think.”
“If she can have a good five years that would be awesome, we can have our life back,” said Winters, who still plans on walking to help others find a donor. “I will spend more of my days walking with my sign to see how many I can get,” he added. “Think about it, we could start a kidney revolution and that would be so great.”
