Parrot Sees His Reflection In The Mirror And Totally Loses It

One of the most common toys bird owners purchase is a mirror and when you see this video, you will understand why.

Parakeets, cockatiels, parrots and others seem to respond well to their own reflections. Or is it the reflection that these animals are responding to? Do they know they are looking at a mirror, or are they simply responding to the reflective object before their eyes? Do they recognize that the bird they are looking at is themselves, or do they believe they are looking at another bird of their species?

Exactly what is happening when a bird locks eyes with itself in the mirror?

Researchers believe the birds are capable of recognizing that they are indeed looking at a mirror. While these intelligent ‘bird brains’ don’t know what they look like, they are aware of what their surroundings look like and are intelligent enough to understand that the world is being reflected around them.

However, what happens when birds (or at least some birds) encounter a reflection of their own world will make you roll around with laughter. The parrot in the following video discovered his reflection and did not know how to handle it. The pet turtle, which sat munching on some lettuce nearby, was unfazed by the mirror, and created a particularly humorous parallel to the bird that is freaking out.

Watch what happens when this bird encounters the mirror:

Big brothers might get a bad reputation for endlessly teasing their little sisters, but at the end of the day, a big brother would do anything to make sure their baby sister is ok.

When the Cochran family found out that their daughter Lindsay had Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a rare disorder that required her to be in a wheelchair since she was 2-years-old, her older brother Trenton stepped up to make sure she never let the situation get the best of her. “It’s easier for me to go through life with a big brother like Trenton,” Lindsay said.

Each year, Trenton runs a 5k race in honor of his sister who can’t run, and to help raise money to find a cure for her Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

If You’ve Seen One Of These Purple Spots, This Is What It Means

VeteranParkingMaplewoodMall

The next time you’re cruising through the parking lot in search of a space, you may come across a purple one.

These new purple spaces are a little shout-out to wounded veterans. In a similar vein as handicap parking spaces, these parking spots are reserved for those who have bravely fought and been wounded in combat.

The purple parking spaces are popping up across the country in small, but growing numbers. Churches, schools, libraries, and government buildings have all requested to take part in the initiative. So far, more than 2,000 signs have been given out, according to John Folsom, president and founder of Wounded Warriors Family Support.

The best part is the signs are free.

You only need to pay for shipping and handling. It’s a simple, real-life way to support your local veterans. To request signs for your own establishment, all you have to do is apply online and pay the fee for shipping. Painting the parking space purple is optional, but it doesn’t hurt the cause (and it looks cool too).

One Florida middle school has even taken it upon themselves to spread the cause throughout their Florida county:

There are over 1.8 million wounded veterans living in the United States today.

The purpose of the purple parking spaces is to make life a little bit easier for those bearing lasting scars from fighting for our freedoms. Purple was chosen as the color of the sparking spaces in honor of the Purple Heart, a military decoration awarded to those wounded or killed in combat.

Cats First Encounter With Puppies Is A New Kind Of Adorable

If you have a younger sibling, you might be able to relate to these cats.

Older brothers and sisters know what it’s like to be the king of the castle. They run this joint, and often their word is the final word (at least in the world of toddlers). But one day, these siblings and the head of the house, have to forfeit their title of being the baby.

Much like the cats in the following video, these older siblings don’t know how to act when somebody new joins the mix. While there are no adorable babies meeting their younger siblings in this compilation, we can assure you the attitude is the same.

Cats have never been known for being the friendliest or the most rational of animals.

Although, they have been known to have a killer sense of fashion:

They’ve even been known to wear some pretty cool hats:

But they’re especially good at running this sh*t:

When they aren’t busy being total weirdos, cats are extremely cool creatures. Of course, they neither cool nor chill when they meet some extremely hyper puppies.

They reinforce their own weirdness when they meet these pooches:

This Man Is Keeping A Daily Journal Not Of Words, But Paper Cranes

One year ago, Christian Marianciuc was in need of a New Year’s Resolution.

He found himself in a place many of us are familiar with. 2014 was coming to a close and with 2015 swooping in, he needed a new thing. Marianciuc came up with the idea of making origami cranes from pieces of paper.

On January 1, he began a new journal. It was a project that required him to make one paper crane a day for a full year. He used little pieces of paper, tin foil, maps, and any other scraps he could think of to create a crane that outlined his day everyday.

Marianciuc’s first crane was his “blank canvas crane,” but it was the first of many:

For example, day 6 gave way to the family drama crane:

Marianciuc was inspired by the popular story of Sadako Sasaki.

Sadako Sasaki was a young girl who lived in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945. Sasaki had been diagnosed with leukemia as a result of the bomb being dropped in Hiroshima. In her hospital bed, she attempted to fold one thousand origami cranes. This was due to a Japanese legend that said anybody who folded a thousand cranes would have a wish granted. Unfortunately,  Sasaki never reached her mark.

Marianciuc was aware of this story, but never had a personal connection to it until he lost his sister to leukemia.

“One of my sisters was also too eager to pick up her wings, and, at the hand of leukemia, left us some years ago,” he told Upworthy.

To honor his sister, Sadako Sasaki, and to push himself to be more present in 2015, he started his origami adventure.

What began as a one-year journey is turning into something bigger. Marianciuc is pushing himself to make a crane a day until he reaches his goal of one thousand paper cranes and is granted his own wish.

Time Lapse Video Of The Evolution Of The Face Is Mesmerizing

Everyday, we spend quite a bit of time studying our own faces.

We meticulously apply makeup, pop those pesky pimples, and make weird faces in the mirror as we sit on the toilet (or perhaps that’s just me).

However, among all those countless hours spent studying our own reflection like a modern-day Narcissus, have we ever stopped to consider the millions of years of evolution that went into shaping that structure?

It’s hard to imagine the mind-numbing amount of time that was spent by our ancestors surviving daily life. We’re talking millions of years spent simply living in tribes, gathering nuts, reproducing, and then dying. Life was pretty dull back then. Each battle with the elements that our ancestors partook in, shaped the genetic pool edging it closer toward what modern man looks like today.

To help you wrap your head around evolution a bit better, palaeo-artist John Gurche has created this 90-second time-lapse that takes you on a visual tour of just how far we’ve come as a species.

The video was released back in 2013, and scientists have moved things around on the human family tree a little since then thanks to new discoveries, but these recreations and the impact they have is still very much as relevant as it was two years ago.

The question remains, what will be the final product 2 million years from now? It will likely be an overly friendly and insanely hot cyborg. But until that happens, entertain yourselves with this:

Why You Should Embrace Your Yearly Winter Weight Gain

$

0

Every year, as summer comes to a close, autumn grows chillier, and the Uggs-with-Starbucks combos make their appearances, I notice something about my body.

We begin to grow less active as the summer days dwindle and eat heartier, tastier, comfort foods.

I don’t know if this is just me, or if this trend is one that everybody seems to experience, but in my opinion, December is the most terrible time of the year because it is the season when I consistently put on weight.

I’m not alone in this either. Many of my friends have told me that their eating habits are cyclical and they find themselves munching more as the days grow short. They also find themselves hating their bodies as this happens too.

Here are all the reasons why you should embrace a little extra padding during the days of holly and treat yourself with some extra jolly.

Your body is doing what it was designed to do:

Your has 200,000 years of evolution working against its love handles. Back in the day (the good ‘ol days when we used to bash each others heads in with rocks rather than guns), food was scarce. Eating was a luxury and when you came across a meal in November, you had to eat it all because who knows when the next one was coming along. Your body has evolved to gain more weight in the winter. Embrace it for doing what it was made to do.

Love your changing body:

It’s often very hard for us to embrace change. One of the biggest changes we struggle to embrace is the physical one happening to our hips (also the fine lines gradually appearing on our faces). Take note of the changes and accept that this is what your body is doing right now.

Tomorrow will be different and when those changes come, that’s fine too. Everything in life is cyclical and some days you’re up, and others you’re down.

Recognize why you’re upset with the added weight:

The only reason you’re bothered by those extra pounds is because somebody told you to be upset with them. A commercial tells you that losing weight is a central value you should have in your life and a thousand other commercials reinforce the message. A graphic designer edits a picture of a model and tells you the definition of ideal feminine beauty, and you listen because a thousand other graphic designers have reinforced that same message.

If this was the 1950s, you’d be thrilled with those extra pounds. Curvy was huge back then (no pun intended). Perhaps we’ll go back there again.

And if we do, you’re already ahead of the times, so embrace it, babe.

Cincinnati College Students Are Using Technology To Fight Homelessness

homeless

Imagine walking down the streets of Cincinnati at dusk.

You pull your coat collar up around your neck and turn your back to the bitter wind as the day winds down. Out of the corner of your eye, you see somebody huddling up under a roll of newspaper, clearly attempting to get comfy for the bitter night. You quickly rush past them, attempting to avoid eye contact. When you’re clear of them, you try to push the thoughts of the winter cold from your mind. “They probably did this to themselves,” you tell yourself. What if, instead of forgetting about people who live on the street, we instead did something to help them?

While offering a homeless person a spot on your couch might not be the best option, neither is walking past in a hurry.

In response to the problem of homelessness in Cincinnati, students at Northern Kentucky University have developed a high-tech tool to help get homeless people off the street.

The students designed an app called Street Reach that links the homeless to services and puts them in direct contact with an outreach worker, according to a Cincinnati news provider.

Here’s how the app works:

If a Cincinnati local sees someone on the street, they can use the app to enter information about the homeless person’s location and any identifying details. If they’re using the app from their phone, GPS information is included. The app then notifies local partners like Strategies to End Homelessness to come help.

However, the app also focuses on protecting the privacy of the individual you’re trying to help. Walking up to somebody who is clearly having a rough time and asking them personal questions is not the way to deal with such a situation.

Instead, the app encourages users to intervene from a distance and then let a trained outreach professional step in:

Rachael Winters, an NKU social work lecturer, said the purpose of Street Reach is a temporary fix to keep people safe and alive on nights they need help the most.

Street Reach is really for the individual who is on the sidewalk, out in the cold, could be exposed to hypothermia or could freeze to death. That’s what this app is for to get those people off the street and into a shelter or housing.

While this certainly doesn’t fix the problem of homelessness, it certainly aids the cause when conditions are dire. Unfortunately, the app is only available to those in Cincinnati at the moment, but spread the word. After all, Facebook was only a small website that was solely available to Harvard students…until it wasn’t. Spread the word about Street Reach too!

Somebody please play fetch with this poor dog!

When his owner sat down to watch a match on the telly (because it appears this happened in the United Kingdom and that’s what they call it there), this poor dog did not know how to make sense of the situation.

The television zoomed in on a player who prepared to throw the dart, and the dog eagerly wagged his tail in preparation for a game of fetch. When the man on the television released the dart, we watched the saddest, silliest, and cutest response from a dog that we rarely come by. It’s so sad to watch this eager dog…but it’s also really funny.

He may be beautiful and highly energetic, but nobody could accuse this dog of being intelligent. That’s okay, we love him anyway and we’re hoping somebody came along and threw him a bone to chase after at some point.

Watch as this humorous dog fails to understand the physics of moving pixels:

This guy is adorable and terribly confused.

This Basenji has come across a hard-boiled egg and he doesn’t know what to do with it. As his owners were preparing food, they thought it might be funny to see how the dog would react to a hard-boiled egg. Their instincts were correct because the dogs reaction to this strange oval-shaped object were as hilarious as we hoped it would be.

We imagine his instincts tell him it’s food, however past experience tells him it doesn’t taste like food, prompting one of the most confused reactions we’ve ever come across.

Basenji are known to be curious and highly energetic dogs, which explains a little about what’s going on with this guy. His owners get a kick out of him as he attempts to make sense of the strange food placed before him. You’ll LOVE watching him hop around on three paws.

Take a look at how this adorable dog attempts to reason with reality:

It’s pretty cool that we live in a world where objects ‘magically’ work for us.

As an adult, we rarely take the time to think about the magic that surrounds us. We call this technology, but if your mind is less than one year old, you probably think it’s magic.

This baby seen in a video that is now going viral recently discovered this magic for himself. One of the first times he was brought into a public bathroom, he discovered something truly extraordinary: the paper towel dispenser.

Yes, these mundane object that we see everyday in department stores, office buildings, and schools are the fodder of fairy tales for this little boy. His reaction is priceless and the awe expressed on his adorable little face is unparalleled.

Watch what happens when this little guy discovers magical technology:

If you got a kick out of this video that’s even close to the kick he got from the automatic towel dispenser, please SHARE with your friends and family. This Goat Was Intended To Be A Siberian Tiger’s Dinner, Now The Two Are Best Buds

An unlikely pair of animals just became friends in a Russian zoo.

Here at LifeDaily, we cover quite the assortment of animals who make unlikely companions. There was the rat and cat who despite their natural tendencies, became friends anyway. There were the Pit Bulls who looked after a blind kitten. And let’s not forget this dog who gave kisses to an unexpected friend.

Never before, however, have we covered a story about a tiger who befriended his dinner. That’s right, in a zoo in the far reaches of Siberia, predator and prey have befriended each other. Amur is a tiger and Timur is a goat. In late November, Timur (who was not named at that time since he was intended to be a meal) was unleashed in the Amur’s enclosure for the big cat to hunt.

However, the tiger chose not to hunt the goat!

The zoo staff also notes that Amur is a pretty lazy tiger, according to the Independent. The display of unlikely friendship has shocked both zookeepers and patrons of the zoo.

Watch how the whole story unfolded and see just how cheeky this brazen beast is toward the timid tiger:

If a dog wore pants, how would they be worn?

The silly question was posed online a few weeks ago and the internet appropriately responded with an outrageously stupid debate.

Sides were taken, comments were made, and just when it seemed the world was in the midst of war, a small Canadian company by the name of Muddy Mutts settled the debate. Until Muddy Mutts came about, the debate seemed frivolous. After all, why would a dog ever need a pair of pants?

You may wonder that exact question if you live in a busy city with well-manicured shrubs and clean sidewalks. However, if you frequently bring your dog to wet terrain and into the woods, then you might have a muddy problem on your hands that involves your dogs feet. If your dog tramps through the mud, all four legs become coated in a mess, creating a hassle for its owner.

Therefore, Muddy Mutts invented pants for dogs, and not only are they fashionable and practical, they are also adorable. According to Huffington Post, the adjustable pants come in six sizes and start at CA $69.99. They come in black or traditional raincoat yellow.

However, before you rush out to buy these doggie pants, we’d like to warn you that the company’s entire inventory is sold out due to a social media frenzy.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t look at these ADORABLE photos of dogs wearing pants:

This Beautiful And Final Note From A Terminal Cancer Patient Will Make You Laugh And Cry

My mother always says dying is just another part of living.

We don’t know why we die, but we also don’t know why we live. All we know is that life is beautiful, chaotic, stressful, difficult, and above all, it is wonderful. Nobody expresses these feelings of life, love, sadness and joy better than Heather McManamy, a Wisconsin mother who passed away in December from breast cancer. But McManamy did not leave without living life to the fullest and giving some final words to her little girl, her friends, and all of us too.

[Credit: Go Fund Me]
[Credit: Go Fund Me]
After Heather passed, her husband Jeff posted a letter she had written to Facebook. The letter was painful, joyful, and filled with a few curses, but McManamy managed to perfectly capture the beauty and sorrow of life with her final words.

She starts off with sadness, a feeling we can all relate to:

[Facebook]
[Facebook]

So…I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is, apparently, I’m dead. Good news, if you’re reading this, is that you are most definitely not (unless they have wifi in the afterlife). Yes, this sucks. It sucks beyond words, but I’m just so damn glad I lived a life so full of love, joy and amazing friends. I am lucky to honestly say that I have zero regrets and I spent every ounce of energy I had living life to the fullest. I love you all and thank you for this awesome life.

She follows with a message about her daughter:

[Facebook]
[Facebook]

Whatever religion brings you comfort, I am happy that you have that. However, respect that we are not religious. Please, please, please do not tell Brianna that I am in heaven. In her mind, that means that I chose to be somewhere else and left her. In reality, I did everything I could to be here with her, as there is nowhere, NOWHERE, I would rather be than with her and Jeff. Please don’t confuse her and let her think for one second that is not true. Because, I am not in heaven. I’m here. But no longer in the crappy body that turned against me. My energy, my love, my laughter, those incredible memories, it’s all here with you. Please don’t think of me with pity or sadness. Smile, knowing that we had a blast together and that time was AMAZING. More than anything, I love making people laugh and smile, so please, rather than dwelling on the tragic Terms of Endearment end of my story, laugh at the memories we made and the fun we had. Please tell Brianna stories, so she knows how much I love her and how proud of her I will always be (and make me sound waaay cooler than I am). Because I love nothing more than being her mommy. Nothing. Every moment with her was a happiness I couldn’t even imagine until she came crashing into our world.

She has a message about cancer:

[Credit: Go Fund Me]
[Credit: Go Fund Me]

And don’t say I lost to cancer. Because cancer may have taken almost everything from me, but it never took my love or my hope or my joy. It wasn’t a “battle” it was just life, which is often brutally random and unfair, and that’s simply how it goes sometimes. I didn’t lose, dammit. The way I lived for years with cancer is something I consider a pretty big victory. Please remember that.

She tells us the importance of love:

Most importantly, I was unbelievably lucky to spend over a decade with the love of my life and my best friend, Jeff. True love and soulmates do exist. Every day was full of hilarity and love with Jeff by my side. He is genuinely the best husband in the universe. Through all my cancer crap, he never wavered when so many people would want to run. Even on the worst days you could imagine, we found a way to laugh together. I love him more than life itself and I truly believe that a love like that is so special it will live forever. Time is the most precious thing in this world and to have shared my life for so long with Jeff is something I am incredibly grateful for. I love you, Jeff. I believe that the awesomeness that is Brianna is our love brought to life, which is pretty beautiful. It absolutely breaks my heart to have to say goodbye. If it’s half as sad for you as it is for me, it breaks my heart over again because the last thing I ever want to do is make you sad. I hope that with time, you can think of me and smile and laugh, because, we had a breathtaking life. Go google Physicist’s Eulogy and know that it is a scientific fact I will always be with you both in some way. I know that if you just stop and look hard enough, I’ll be with there (in as non-creepy a way possible). You’re my world and I loved every second we had together more than words.

And lastly, she speaks of life in the most beautiful way possible:

Friends, I love you all and thank you for the most wonderfully awe-inspiring life. And thank you to all of my amazing doctors and nurses who have taken such incredible care of me. I don’t doubt that my team gave me every possible good day that they could. From the bottom of my heart, I wish all my friends long, healthy lives and I hope you can experience the same appreciation for the gift of each day that I did. If you go to my funeral, please run up a bar tab that would make me proud. Heck, blast “Keg on My Coffin” and dance on the bar for me (because there had better be a dance party at some point). Celebrate the beauty of life with a kickass party because you know that’s what I want and I believe that in a weird way, I will find a way to be there too (you know how much I hate missing out on fun). I look forward to haunting each one of you, so this isn’t so much a goodbye as it is see you later Please do me a favor and take a few minutes each day to acknowledge the fragile adventure that is this crazy life. Don’t ever forget: every day matters.

If you would like to read Heather’s note in full, or find out more about the story, you can check out her Facebook page here.

This note touched us deeply and brought tears to our eyes. If you believe that everyday matters, if you’re grateful for the family in your life, or if you miss and love somebody who was lost, please SHARE this beautifully heartbreaking story and remind your friends and family that every day matters.

He might be small in size, but he certainly has a big brain.

This Siberian Husky is in the midst of learning new tricks. So far, his dedicated owners have taught him to sit, crawl, and even give a high-five. However, they seem to be having trouble teaching him to play dead…with their own twist.

Rather than simply teaching the dog your stereotypical form of playing dead, the devoted Husky owners have taught the the friendly pup to respond when they point their fingers and say, “bang bang.”

At least, they’re attempting to teach him to respond. However, they often get a blank stare and a happy smile as they attempt to train the dog. He’s not catching on but he is certainly adorable:

However, with a little patience and a lot of treats, this Husky’s owners teach him a trick that is simply adorable:

Siberian Huskies are a highly intelligent breed, but as the video shows, they are not easy to train. The dogs are naturally selfish and they typically will not respond to commands that appear to have little purpose (like the video above shows). However, these dogs are also a sweet and extremely friendly breed, making friends with nearly everybody who comes their way. You wouldn’t want a Husky as a guard dog, but you would want them around your kids.

If you found this Husky as precious as we did, please SHARE and give somebody in your life a chuckle.

Good Samaritan Gives Freezing Homeless Man The Shirt Off His Back

The winter is by far the hardest and most dangerous season for the homeless as temperatures dip below freezing

When a New York man saw that the elderly homeless man sitting across from him was shirtless on a day when the temperature had fallen below freezing, he knew he had to do something to help keep him warm. Despite only having a t-shirt on himself, the man did the only thing he could think of, and literally gave away the shirt off his back.

This man was riding the subway when he noticed a homeless man sitting across from him without even a t-shirt on despite the freezing winter temperatures. He decided to help, and give the man the shirt he was wearing.

Even after giving away his shirt, this man felt his generosity wasn’t enough. He went back over to his seat where the rest of his things were, and grabbed a hat for the homeless man, so he could stay a little bit warmer in the freezing weather.

Cooper is a two-year-old rescue Boxer. He hasn’t been able to spend much time with the new baby because he is currently learning paw control, according to the folks who posted the video.

Paw control, like it sounds, teaches the dog how to control his paws. Basically, the dog gets so excited, he doesn’t know how to control where he flails, which can be an issue when he spends time with an infant. (It’s similar to this video, which shows an excited bunny unable to control his paws as he’s being fed.)

However, on Madi’s 2 month birthday, Cooper was allowed to visit her (for a few moments) and give her a few kisses. The result is a priceless memory in which the dog locks eyes with the little girl and a lifelong friendship begins. These two will surely be companions for a long time and have to joy of growing up together.

Watch the charming moment being pressing play below:
