The only way to truly avoid a hangover is by not drinking alcohol, but that’s not really any fun. If your normal prescription of Netflix and funny dog videos isn’t cutting it, you may want to try these 8 tips for minimizing that hangover.
8. Chow down on eggs
Eggs are an excellent source of cysteine and taurine. Cysteine helps to break down the toxins that cause headaches after the body digests alcohol, and taurine has been shown to reverse liver damage. Try plain scrambled eggs, or a dry omelet to avoid upsetting your stomach further with heavy, greasy breakfast meats.
7. Avoid herbal teas
Herbal teas may be comforting on a normal day, however you might want to avoid drinking them when you’re hungover. Researchers have found that herbal teas make you process alcohol more slowly, which will make the hangover last even longer. Try a decaffeinated green tea instead if you want something warm and soothing.
6. Skip the smokes
Scientists have found that those who smoke cigarettes while drinking are more likely to experience hangovers with more intense symptoms. If all the other negative health effects associated with smoking cigarettes hasn’t deterred you, maybe avoiding the nausea and blinding headaches will.
5. Skip the bubbles
Scientists say that the bubbles in champagne and other carbonated, alcoholic drinks may cause alcohol to be absorbed more quickly. This means you get drunk faster, and get even worse hangovers.
4. Potassium
Even if you did drink a glass of water before passing out, chances are the morning after a night out you’ll still be a little dehydrated. In order to make up for the loss of electrolytes caused by dehydration, be sure to eat potassium rich foods like bananas, dark leafy greens, and avocados.
3. Yoga Breath
While yoga is known for curing a plethora of health issues, it isn’t a perfect cure for hangovers. The deep, heavy breathing that is promoted in the practice, however, will get the blood and oxygen flowing, which helps relieve stress.
2. Keep it light
While Whisky and Bourbon have been having a moment in the spotlight recently, they also might be to blame for having worse hangovers. Many dark alcoholic drink contain congeners, a byproduct produced during fermentation, which may cause worse hangovers.
1. One to one rule
Try drinking one glass of water after each alcoholic beverage. By alternating with water, you will help prevent getting so dehydrated, which is a major cause for headaches the next morning. Drinking water between drinks also spaces out the time between alcoholic drinks, and will naturally slow down your drinking pace.
However, it is possible to overdo it. Drinking too much water can also put stress on your body. Before bed drink a glass of water (and possibly a second, if you’re extremely thirsty), and leave a full glass on your bed stand for the morning. It’s really that simple.
