The 10 Best (and Worst) Things Dads do to Embarrass Us

fathers day

They’re too honest with their kid’s friends:

“I ran into my friend’s Dad the other day and he asked, ‘have you heard from Mike recently?’
‘No,’ I said.
‘Yeah,’ he responded. ‘I heard he blew it with you.”
-Brittany, 22

They don’t know how to act in public:

“We were out to lunch on a hot summer day once, and when the waiter came over and asked us if we’d like anything to drink, my Dad said, ‘yes, we’d like all your water. We’re really thirsty. We’re camels.”
-Matthew, 24

They love Dad jokes:

“Son: Where are my sunglasses?
Dad: I don’t know… where are my dadglasses?”
-IAmAnExParrot (via reddit)

They don’t know how to behave at McDonalds:

“After we received our food, somehow they messed up our order.
My Brother: Dad, they gave me McChickens instead of McDoubles.
Dad: Looks like they made a McSteak.”
-CapnCrunchDaPimp (via Reddit)

They were young and crazy once too:

“We decided to grab a bite at the [mall] food court. I noticed he was watching a teenager sitting next to him. The teenager had spiked hair in all different colors – green, red, orange, and blue.
My Dad kept staring at her. The teenager kept looking and would find my Dad staring every time. When the teenager had had enough, she sarcastically asked, ‘What’s the matter old man, never done anything wild in your life?’
Knowing my Dad, I quickly swallowed my food so that I would not choke on his response; I knew he would have a good one! In classic style he responded without batting an eyelid:
‘Got stoned once and screwed a peacock. I was just wondering if you were my daughter.’ ”
-Creddit_card (via Reddit)

They’re way too proud of us

“I got an internship with my Dad’s company. My office was in a different department from where he works. On my first day he poked his head in the door and shouted across the room, ‘that’s my little girl! Make me proud hun.’
So much for keeping it in the bag that my Dad works for the company.”
-Jess, 21

They like to plan for the future:

“My dad is getting his voicebox removed on Friday and he’s in the process of recording useful phrases onto his smartphone so that he can communicate verbally before he can use any speech aids, like ‘I’m in pain’ or ‘Please bring me water.’ One of the phrases my dad recorded for his first follow-up visit with the doctor is ‘I think I’m losing my voice!’ ”
-AnthraxyWaxy (via Reddit)

They’re extremely accepting of their age and poor eyesight:

hollister dad-123Reddit123 (via Reddit)

They like to tell the same joke too many times:

“As a kid, whenever I’d ask my Dad, ‘what’s for dinner?’ he’d consistently respond by saying, ‘close your eyes. What do you see?’
Everytime! Ever. Single. Time.”
-Rachel, 21

And they know how majestically pair baseball with Normcore:

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there! We know you don’t mean it. You’re just being your joke-cracking, normcore-wearing, pun-loving self. But um…next time, could you maybe be a little bit less of yourself.

9 Flat Belly Tricks To Get You Ready for Summer

stilettoqueens.files.wordpress.com

Summer is on it’s way, and while we may definitely be ready for the warm weather, our tummies may not be.

The last thing we want when we are heading off to the pool or beach, is for our stomachs to look and feel bloated. Of course diet and exercise helps, but it also helps to eat foods that will prevent this bloating. Some of the really healthy foods that we consume are actually responsible for packing on extra water weight.

LifeDaily shares 9 Flat-Belly Tricks To Get You Ready for Summer:

1. Water with lemon

It may sound strange that we are suggesting more water to get rid of water weight, but water is one of the most important things you can do to keep belly fat at away. Retaining water is your body’s way of making sure it has enough water in times of drought- so the less you drink, the more you will retain. Adding some fresh lemon to your water revs up your bodies ability to flush out salt, so drinking water and lemon together doubles the diuretic effect.

2. Certain fruits

Fruit is great for digestion, while also having a high water content. The fruits you should stick to to help give you a flat tummy are melons such as watermelon, honeydew and cantaloupe, citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits, and also pineapple. Watermelon contains about 92% water, citrus fruits contain about 80-90% water, and pineapple contains about 85% water, all helping your body to flush out excess sodium.

3. Certain vegetables

With some exceptions, vegetables are easy to digest and are really good for you. While vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, onions and cabbage are extremely healthy for you they may cause you to bloat, but vegetables like asparagus, celery and cucumbers are great for warding off bloating.

4. Use more natural sugars- avoid artificial sweeteners or sugar substitutes

Our favorite artificial sugars like Splenda are not all too healthy for our tummies. But the best sugars for them are more natural ones such as honey or agave nectar, and if we must use sugar in our coffee or tea, (which most of us do) then we should stick to brown or white sugar.

5. Plain yogurt

Probiotics like yogurt have a plethora of health benefits such as an abundance of good bacteria, but certain flavored yogurts that contain a lot of sugar cause the opposite effect-iritating your stomach, and causing gas and bloating. Your best bet is to stick to plain yogurt for a flat tummy, which you can add fruit or honey to to sweeten it naturally.

6. Peppermint tea

Peppermint tea’s natural ingredient is menthol, which has been proven to help soothe your stomach lining. The easiest way to get your daily dose of peppermint is with hot tea, or added to iced tea in the hot summer months.

7. Ginger

Along with ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties, this spice works wonders in settling an upset stomach and nausea. The ancient Greeks used to eat ginger after meals to ease the digestive process, and it is best to eat in the freshest form to ensure the most health benefits.

8. Fennel seeds

Fennel seeds can easily be sprinkled directly on your food to relax the muscles in your digestive tract, and also allow any gas to pass. Fennel seeds can be viewed as a real bloat-blaster, and its other benefits include relieving water retention, reducing obesity (it suppresses the appetite), and relieving menstrual problems.

9. Rosemary

Rosemary can be added to tea or lemon water, or used to flavor lean meats and potatoes, and it is great for helping digestion. In addition, it also tastes and smells wonderful. The theory is that by eating well and taking rosemary, you will eat less, and therefore consume fewer calories.

Which one of these 9 flat belly tricks is your favorite? Is there one you will implement into your diet for this summer? Let us know.

7 Things You Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Do On Your Own

how-to-enjoy-doing-things-alone-2

Society has conditioned us to think that being alone in public is the worst thing in the world. Now we spend so much time trying to get a group together just to do something simple like eat lunch. But maybe it’s time to stop being so afraid to do something with your number one: yourself.

Being alone is scary for most people, because we fear judgement. But really, letting other people dictate what you do is the scary thing! It’ll keep you from experiencing everything out of life you want to. Want to catch a show but your friends are busy? Go anyway! Need a drink after a long day of work, but no one wants to join? Do it yourself! Here are 7 easy things you can do alone–all it takes is a deep breath and a little confidence.

alonein-a-bar

1. Get a drink.

People always talk about picking someone up at a bar, so why can’t you go and do that alone. You (hopefully) don’t need help talking to someone, so going and sitting down at your local bar and grabbing a drink is something you can do alone. And maybe a cute stranger will approach you–or you can approach them–and something good will come from it. Hey, it worked for Meredith and Derek, right?

2. Grab a bite.

The one thing that people are terrified of: going into a restaurant and actually sitting down by yourself to eat. Which is crazy when we stop to think about it, since you probably eat alone other places, like at home, or in your office. Eating alone at your desk can be really unhealthy though, so maybe try going out. People aren’t judging you as much as you think they are–in fact, they are probably wishing they had your confidence.

3. Sing karaoke.

This might sound crazy, but it’s actually a simple thing to do alone. Karaoke bars are a lot of fun, and people are generally very accepting (read: drunk) so going alone would not only be unnoticed, but also welcomed, especially if you kill it onstage. Plus, it’s a great way to make new friends, because complimenting someone on their performance is a simple conversation starter.

movies

4. See a movie.

Why would you be embarrassed to sit alone, in the dark, when people can’t really even see you? Seeing a movie alone is actually pretty common, and especially when movie theaters are mostly empty, you won’t be judged for sitting by yourself. Most people probably won’t even notice. So are you really not going to see that movie you’ve been waiting for just because you’re alone?

concert

5. Catch a concert.

If your friends don’t like the same band as you, then go alone! Concerts are loud and crowded anyway, so you wouldn’t be talking to your friends if they had come. And you can easily get lost in the crowd, so people would never notice you were there alone. So go and enjoy your music!

musuem

6. Go to a museum.

This one is simple, because other people around you definitely doesn’t make a difference on the art. Museums are typically quiet places to reflect on what you see, so why can’t you do that alone? And if you don’t believe it, science has proved that having friends around you does not increase how much fun you have (even though you expect it to).

Meetup

7. Join a Meetup group.

And if you’re looking for an easy way to break into the alone-in-public world, this is it. Meetup is an online company where you can sign up to attend an event and meet new people. Find a group, start a group, and get out there to meet like-minded people. It’s like a baby step to going out alone, because you know everyone else will be alone too!

10 Warning Signs That You’re In Bad Company

$

0

The people that we spend our time with have a huge impact on our lives.

Sometimes we may not realize that those we surround ourselves with greatly affect our mood, our perspective on the world, and our personality. This is why it’s so important to invest in relationships that enrich us mentally and physically, and only value to our life, as opposed to take away from it.

LifeDaily identifies the 10 Warning Signs That You’re In Bad Company:

1. You don’t feel like you are yourself around this person

You can’t quite put your finger on it, but you find yourself acting and feeling differently when you are in this person’s company. You can’t relax as you normally would, and you always have your guard up, because you find this person draining to your authentic self.

2. They are overwhelmingly negative

Negativity rains over this person, and they are always complaining, and pointing out the bad in a situation. You may even find yourself being more negative and cynical when you are around them because negativity is contagious. If this person is a close friend to you, you might want to offer your help because negative people are often projecting their own problems onto the world around them.

3. It’s all about them

This person really doesn’t care about your interests, and your life, they rarely check in with you to see how you’re doing, and if they do, it’s only so that they can talk about themselves, and you can’t get a word in edgewise. You feel unimportant around them, and certainly not valued.

4. They drain you

Being around this person drains your energy, both mentally and physically. You feel exhausted after spending some time with them, and you feel like being around them requires more work and energy than anything else.

5. They’re critical of you

This person is critical of everything about you. They are constantly pointing out your flaws, and picking on you in any way that they can. They make you feel insecure, and upon leaving hanging out with this person, who find yourself even more critical of yourself, and you start to question your self-worth.

6. They’re unsupportive

In whatever your pursuits are, this person always has something to say about it. They rarely say: “Wow, I’m so happy for you.. That’s amazing!.. I can’t wait to hear more.” Instead they just don’t support you, they don’t offer words of encouragement, and you just don’t feel like you’re supported.

7. They’re a bad influence

They push you to do or try things that aren’t good for you, because they are so unhappy with themselves that they don’t care about your health or well-being either. This can range from anything like drugs, or simply spending more money than you can spend. Overall they encourage and push you to make choices that don’t have your best interests at heart.

8. They’re envious of you

This person envies you, and it comes across in the most obvious way, but they will never admit it. Instead they will pick on you, and try and bring you down because they know that they can never be you.

9. They’re gossipy

Gossipers are the worst people. Not only does gossiping display your unintelligence- that you have nothing better to talk about than others, but it also shows signs of insecurity and weakness within yourself. So if you have a friend like this, which most of us do, then you should be weary of the amount of time you spend with this person, because a gossiper is certainly bad company to be around. Also be cognizant of any time you may spend gossiping- it is only harming you.

10. They’re judgmental

This person is judgmental of you, and of everything. They’ve always got something to say, which is why you’re afraid to share things with them, because you’re afraid they might judge you.

All of these 10 things prevent you from being your authentic self, and they hold you back in life, because you are in such bad company.

15 Signs You’ve Caught the Travel Bug

“Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow.” – Anita Desai

Try to see the world. There are so many unbelievable sites and experiences to be had, all outside of your little bubble. If you can travel alone, go for it. If you’d rather go with a friend, start planning. Those of us who already have the itch, know it far too well. You don’t just want to see the world, you need to. One of your deepest desires is to travel far and wide across the globe. It’s just a matter of time before you check off all those places on your bucket list.

Here are 15 signs to know your Wanderlust is real.

1. Your bucket list is never-ending. You want to see the most famous sights, but you also want to live like a local. Thus, doubling your list in size.
2. Schedules aren’t for you. You’re all about being on the move, seizing the moment, and enjoying the spontaneity in life.
3. It doesn’t matter the location, it’s about being on the move. As long as it’s somewhere new, you’ll make the best of it. Your curiosity leads you to interesting discoveries no matter where you end up.
4. Agendas? You definitely don’t want someone telling you what to do and at what time. There’s exploring to be had, and you’re going to do just that. Tourist life is fun once in a while, but you want to create your own adventures, break the rules, and live life to the fullest.
5. Settling down is a foreign feeling. Coming home is always pleasurable, but it’s not long before the itch to be out on the road comes creeping in.
6. This is why relationships just don’t work out for you. It’s not that you don’t want to find love, but to you love might mean to stay put and you can’t have that.
7. You’re a people person. You love people, you can talk to just about anyone. Which is why traveling is for you. You’re exposed to people from all walks of life, nothing interests you more…
8. Which is why your Facebook is filled with friends from all over the world. Oh, not everyone has friends in 4 continents?
9. A couch is cool. You don’t look for the best accommodations. Travelers differ from tourists in that, all they need is a roof of some sort, and they’ll make it work. It’s not about comfort, it’s about experiences.
10. Books are abundant. Whether its a travel guide, a biography, or your favorite YA novel. Nothing comforts you more than words on a page, and not an electronic one. The only companion you need on your travels is your favorite book.
11. You can live out of a backpack. All you need is anything that you can carry on your back. If you can’t fit it, you don’t need it.
12. You’ll write about your experiences. Nothing is better than writing down your experiences to share with your friends and family later. You definitely blogged about the time that horse bucked you off its back on a trail in Tuscany.
13. You can make the most of your money. All of the tips and blogs about traveling on a budget, you know the tricks front and back. You can stretch your dollar to the absolute limit, while not giving up your good times.
14. GPS?! Who needs that. Ever heard of “not all those who wander are lost”? Live in the moment. Get lost. Sometimes you find the best places by getting lost.
15. You do get homesick. Of course you miss your family and friends, and your hometown (or parts of it). You will come home, at least for a little while.

The last thing you want a nice dinner out with your friends to be is awkward.

Sometimes, despite our well wishes, it is.

Usually, there is always one friend who has to make things difficult. Either it’s asking for individual checks, or only putting money towards their meal. And sometimes, there is another friend who orders the entire menu and 15 glasses of wine, and expects everyone to pay for it. We’ve discovered that there is really a fine line between what’s considered “proper dinner etiquette,” and what’s just plain rude.

To lighten the mood, and awkward dinner situations (for everyone), LifeDaily has compiled a list of What NOT To Do When Dining With Friends:

1. Do not ask for your own individual check

15 Habits That Will Make You The Best Intern Ever

Internships can be difficult–it’s your first time in the real adult world. But there are certain tricks you can do in order to make yourself the best intern your boss has ever seen.

Getting the internship is the easy part. It’s the process that can be hard. From being scared or nervous, to being a little unprepared to work in your field, you might find yourself wandering to your first day on the job with no clue what to do next. Here’s a helpful guide to keep in mind of things to do that will make the internship worthwhile, and you the best intern ever.

1. Be ready to learn.

Internships aren’t just necessary resume-fillers, they are an important way for you to learn the skills you’ll need when you get a full-time job. Ask a ton of questions, and take detailed notes. You’ll never know when you’ll need these skills in the future.

2. Be early.

The early bird gets the worm, and for interns, that is doubly true. Not only do you show off to your boss that you are reliable (see #11), you’re more likely to get the best jobs if you’re competing against other interns. 15 minutes early is on time for an intern–even if your boss and co-workers are usually late.

3. Be resourceful.

Don’t be that intern that interrupts the boss every few minutes to ask a dumb question (yes, there are dumb questions, and those are the ones you can answer by using Google). Use everything you have at your disposal: the internet, other interns, other workers in the office, and your brain. If you can do things on your own, your boss will be impressed.

4. Be positive and professional.

A good attitude is one of the most important tools in an intern’s belt. You’ll never get hired on full time if people don’t like you, and your boss also won’t go out of his or her way to teach and help you if you have a surly attitude. Positivity goes a long way, even if you’re nervous.

5. Make relationships with coworkers.

Network, network, network! Making connections is so important–sometimes, more important than the actual internship. Be friendly and make lasting connections–definitely use LinkedIn–so that you’ll know someone to turn to in the future when you’re job searching and/or have an industry question.

6. Document your accomplishments.

Every interview you do from now on will ask you about your greatest accomplishments in one way or another. Don’t be caught off guard; if you keep track of what you accomplish during your internship by documenting your responsibilities, you’ll be able to look at what you completed after the internship is over.

7. Never turn down an opportunity.

If your boss asks you to do something, do it. Even if it’s to get coffee. Even if it’s to make copies. Being an intern means that you are the low man on the totem pole. But if you don’t put up a fight, and take every opportunity seriously, your boss will probably be more likely to give you a good job later on, when they know you are trustworthy. Plus, sometimes when the task sounds meaningless, it ends up being very educational.

8. Become irreplaceable.

If during your internship, you can show off that your passion and creativity is irreplaceable, you might be able to score a full time job at the company when you graduate. Great work ethic will help you show this off and make you a one-of-a-kind worker.

9. Get one-on-one time.

It is very important that you get some time to talk to your boss one-on-one, not only to create a relationship, but also to set time aside specifically for your questions. During this time, your questions don’t have to be related to the task at hand, but can be more general, like about the job search process, or his/her tips for you. Try asking them out for a coffee break or lunch (and you pay–since you’re taking up their time).

10. Be dependable.

Meet deadlines, work hard, do everything you’re asked and more. Being dependable is very important, and an important element in reaching a few of the other goals listed above.

11. Find a mentor.

This one is tougher, because you can’t just walk up and ask anyone to “be your mentor.” But if you create a meaningful connection with someone who’s ahead of your in your field, making them your mentor can be one of the most helpful things in the (professional) world. You’ll always have someone to ask for tips, tricks, and advice for the hard process to come.

12. Ask for feedback.

Asking your boss whether or not your performance is on the right track is not only acceptable, but encouraged. You want to make sure you are doing everything you can to succeed, and your boss will appreciate the fact that you are working your hardest to do so.

13. Hustle.

You can prove you’re a hustler (and therefore invaluable) by going above and beyond at work. Volunteer to help co-workers or do a project outside of your job description. Never sit at your desk with nothing to do–you can always find something to fill your time if you try hard enough.

14. Don’t forget thank-you notes.

When the internship is over, write a detailed, hand-printed thank you note to your boss. They took you on with no experience, and gave you a great semester/summer worth of experience to take away. That’s kind of amazing, and you should definitely be thankful.

15. Stay in touch.

Keep in contact with people from the company after the internship is over–especially if you are not a senior. Just because you aren’t looking for full time work now doesn’t mean you never will be, and if you were great at your internship and keep your relationships strong after it ends, you just might find yourself interviewing with a boss you already know and love.

Being one of the richest and most recognizable faces in the world is hard. No, seriously–actors, singers, and models have very bizarre jobs. They work extremely long hours, travel to distant places, and are followed by relentless paparazzi. It’s not your typical 9-5 job, so naturally, since celebs work really hard, they play even harder. Sometimes too hard…

The International Labor Organization(ILO) established June 12 as World Day Against Child Labor over ten years ago, yet despite raising awareness on the issue millions of children continue to be illegally employed. According to ILO,

“More than 168 million children are trapped in child labour. More than half of them, 85 million, are in hazardous work. This persistence of child labour is rooted in poverty and lack of decent work for adults, lack of social protection, and a failure to ensure that all children are attending school through to the legal minimum age for admission to employment.”

This year’s World Day Against Child Labor focuses on the importance of education  as a critical role in tackling the issue, as these children miss out on the education and childhood they deserve.

Take a look at ten images below of child labor taken around the world.

7 Ways To Forgive And Let Go

$

Forgiveness is hard but the only way we can be at peace within ourselves is if we forgive others and let go of the pain that they caused us.

It hurts tremendously when someone hurts or betrays us, and while in the beginning we can never imagine forgiving them, over time we must, not for them, but for ourselves.

LifeDaily shares 7 Ways To Forgive And Let Go:

1. Accept that this person has hurt you

No matter how bad this person has hurt you, feel it, accept it, and move on. There is no time period for how long after you should move past the pain and negative emotions, because it differs for everyone, but just accept what has happened, and know that you will move past it, and get over it.

2. Accept that noone is perfect

People are not perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. As much as this person may or may not realize how much they have hurt you, it unfortunately cannot be taken back, and neither can the pain that you experienced. Just know that whatever this person did to you was no reflection of you, rather of themselves, and their own internal issues and battles.

3. Feel sympathy towards the person that hurt you

All you can do when someone hurts you is feel sorry for them, and not for yourself. Yes, it was sad, upsetting and difficult what they put you through, but again, their mistake was strictly a reflection of them, and their internal problems, so feel sympathetic towards them.

4. Forgive them for yourself

You know that the only person that holding a grudge hurts is you. Holding anger or a grudge towards someone can literally make you feel ill, and it is not healthy for you. You forgiving this person is for noone other than yourself.

5. Send love to those that hurt

Those people that hurt you need love more than anything else, because you know that that person must be going through a lot to do what they did to you- so send love their way. Rise above all the nonsense, and only send positive out into the universe and to others.

6. Know that time will heal all

Cliche, but very true. Time is the magic potion, and time truly heals all. When you get a cut, it may look pretty bad in the beginning, but over time it heals completely, and your heart is the same. While you may never forget the pain that someone has caused you, you can definitely forgive, and remember that everyone has their own struggles in life, and as hard as it is to not take it personally- you really can’t.

7. Focus on you

Focusing on you is going to be replayed time and time again, especially on LifeDaily, because it is one of the most important principals that we should follow. Focus on your life, your school or your work, and your passions and interests. Focus on things that make you happy, and focus on making yourself better. Everyday.
