Traveling is rewarding, but what about traveling alone? Many people say that seeing part of the world on your own is the best way to travel.

Just because you don’t have a travel companion doesn’t mean you shouldn’t travel. In fact, there are many places around the world that a solo traveler will be welcomed just as much–if not more so–than a big group. Don’t let others hold you back, because wanderlust is serious business, and you should be able to see the world. If you are safe and careful, traveling alone could be even more rewarding. And if you aren’t sure where to start, here is a list of the best 8 destinations for solo travelers.

1. Australia

One of the safest countries in the world, Australia is an amazing choice for solo travel. It often tops many traveler’s bucket lists, so why not choose it as your next destination to take in alone? Australians tend to have the most wanderlust of all, so they will definitely accept and welcome you to their country. From seeing the Sydney opera house, to the wildlife of the outback, the vast differences of the country will make sure that every traveler finds something they love.

2. Thailand

Thailand has some of the nicest people in the world, and is incredibly affordable. If that isn’t reason enough to make it your solo vacation destination, then consider the fact that it is one of the most colorful places to see. From the bright street markets to the bluest ocean, photographers will always find something to capture here–with no photo editing required. And English is spoken here, so if you aren’t an expert in languages, you’ll still fit right in.

3. Chile

The city of Santiago is sophisticated and trendy, and solo travelers will easily find something they enjoy. In the Bellavista or Lastarria neighborhoods, there are a ton of lively bars, restaurants, and street cafes, so people watching is a must-do. Join in the fun and the tasty food! And for those looking to enjoy the scenery, take a trip south to Patagonia, where the hiking and boating through the fjords will reveal majestic mountains and glaciers. If you’re lucky, you might come across some dolphins or whales that live in the area.

4. Costa Rica

This peaceful escape will keep every solo traveler busy from the minute they arrive to the minute they leave. Lovers of the outdoors will be happy with the many options, from hiking in the jungle, to seeing volcanoes, to soaking in natural hot springs, to learning to surf. And if the wilderness isn’t your cup of tea, you can visit one of the many yoga retreats around. Either way, you’ll be able to get a relaxing break from real life and can easily entertain yourself.

5. Ireland

Ireland is easily one of the most beautiful rural landscapes in the world, but it also has many lively cities. Start out in Dublin, where you can grab a pint with locals at one of the hundreds of taverns around. Then make your way around the west coast of the island, on the “Wild Atlantic Way,” which covers 2,500km of the coast, and reveals some of the most breathtaking views Ireland has to offer (a fan favorite is the Cliffs of Moher). And Ireland is populated with many small B&Bs, so you’ll always have somewhere to stay.

6. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

For the beach-loving traveler, you can’t miss this coastal town in Mexico. You can spend the whole day at the beach, from the many beach-side bars, to the private beach clubs, which have not only beach access, but private pools for those who prefer to stay on land. And when you’re tired of lounging around (if that is even possible), take a water taxi to Yelapa, a charming beach town in the Bahia de Banderas. And if you’re looking for nightlife, you can’t miss the lively bars and restaurants at the Malecon boardwalk.

7. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is the perfect city for those who don’t have a ton of experience with maps–it has a super easy transportation system for even the most navigation-confused of us. Barcelona has amazing architectural tours, so if you are a fan of the great buildings, go now! Here you can see nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites. And if you’re a foodie, Barcelona is home to some of the most amazing Spanish dishes, and sitting alone at Tapas restaurants around the city is a great way to make friends.

8. New York City, US

New York City is an incredibly stimulating place, which is great for those traveling alone. From the world-famous art galleries, like the MoMa or the Met, to the amazing stage performances on Broadway, NYC is bursting with activities you can do by yourself. Walk through Central Park or see the famous monuments like the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building. But no matter what you do, expect to blend in to the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps.

5 Reasons He’s Not Texting You Back

1. He’s running a marathon…in Norway

He obviously forgot to mention that he frequently travels the world to run marathons because he goes so often it’s simply second nature. Gosh, he’s so dreamy, and athletic, and well-traveled. One day the two of you will wander the world together traveling to exotic places.

How to React: Obviously, if he’s in another country, his cell phone isn’t working so he can’t text you back. This also means you can’t text him good luck wishes. Try sending flowers to his house with personalized haikus of affection. He’ll be impressed by your literary skills.

2. He reached into a bag of grapes and was bitten by a black widow spider hiding in there

It’s terrifying and totally plausible, I swear (I read about it on the internet somewhere). There he was, snacking on grapes while sending you cute texts and next thing he knew, he was clenching his hand in agonizing pain. Those fingers aren’t going to be able to text for a long time.

How to React: Okay, this is the test that separates the best from the rest. Now is the time to show him how devoted you are. I recommend sending him flowers, candy, love notes, etc. You can even hire a sky-writer. His friends will be impressed by how far you will go to wish him the best health.

3. He’s at work

This is totally reasonable. Of course he can’t text you back. He’s busy selling Cutco knives door-to-door and can’t stop mid-sales pitch to reply to your winky face tongue combo emoji. Work can be very demanding and he needs to put time and energy into his job.

How to React: Demand that he quits. I’m sorry, but this relationship will never survive if he is going to let trivial things stand in the way of your love. He’s abandoning you for the useless gain of monetary wealth. Your love should be the only thing he needs for his survival. If you explain the logic behind this, he’ll understand that a job is nothing compared to your affection.

4. He’s on a date with another girl

While this may feel like a bad thing, it’s actually a wonderful thing. He knows he’s going to be spending a significant amount of time with you: the gem that shines brighter than the rest. This can be quite terrifying for guys. He’s scared now and his trepidation might cause him to do something rash. He just wants to see what else might be out there. Now that he’s on a date, he can see how every other girl pales in comparison to you.

How to React: Make it easier on him. Show up to the restaurant and sit a few tables away. Make sure you stare at both of them the whole meal. He’s feeling anxious about letting this poor girl down easy. Of course he is, he’s a nice guy. With you there, he’ll want to cut to the chase, rip it off like a band-aid, and leave before he strings her along any further. He knows it’s the right thing to do.

5. He’s just not that into you

Impossible.

How to React: Keep texting him. He’s just shy and needs the right encouragement. I’d say one text every hour should do the trick. Heck, one text every minute. He’ll build up the courage in no time.

7 Reasons Why Finding The Right Partner Is Key To Your Success

lifehack.org

Having the right partner by your side may be that key ingredient to make you even more successful at work, and in every aspect of your life.

Sometimes when we are in the wrong relationship, everything in our lives suffer, from our work, to school, to our friends and even family. But when we are in the right relationship, this is completely opposite: We find ourselves doing better at work and in every aspect of our lives.

Here are 7 Reasons Why Finding The Right Partner Is Key To Your Success:

1. They don’t stand in your way

When you have a partner in your life who wants you to be the best you can be, they won’t try and get in the way of that. If you have to work overtime, your partner will be supportive, and will not complain about you having to work late and not spending enough time together.

2. They are excited about your job

Sometimes its frustrating when none of your friends and family are interested in your job, or as excited about it as you are. But when you’re with a partner who is enthusiastic about sharing your work, it makes you feel more secure that you’ve made the right career choices.

3. They aren’t intimidated by your success

A lot of men can be intimidated by dating a woman who is more successful than them, and some really independent alpha females may also not like it if their man is doing much better. But, if your partner truly supports you, they won’t make you feel guilty about climbing the career ladder. In fact, they will be happy for you.

4. They know how to help you relax

When your partner can sense that you are hitting a dead end, they know how to take your mind off of work. They don’t want to see you running your wheels without any fuel, and whether the solution is a nice day outside or a quite night in, your partner knows how to help you relax.

5. They pick fights wisely

Your partner knows how important your time is, and if they’re going to fight with you about something, it is not a time when you have your most important work to do. They don’t want to be the reason for your failure, or contribute to anymore stress than you already have.

6. They make you feel secure

A partner that constantly makes you feel secure, eliminates the worry in the back of your mind that your relationship is at risk. And when you don’t have to worry about your relationship, you are able to focus completely on your work, and a task at hand.

7. They are positive without being unrealistic

There’s a huge difference between being positive and being unrealistic. It is important to have a partner who is positive and listens to your crazy ideas, but also who knows when to suggest that you pull in the reins a little bit (especially if your head is getting lost in the clouds).

6 Affordable Ways to Make Your Home Chic

Designing your home on a budget can be hard. With all the things you need to make your home look the way you’ve always dreamed, where do you start? Sometimes, just one little change can make all the difference.

Celerie Kemble, interior designer and creator of the site Decorist, has a list of six simple changes you can make to a room to take it from drab to fab. Follow these rules and your home will be looking chic in no time. And the best part? You can buy all of these items even on the tightest budget.

1. Start from the Top

Your ceilings need love too–don’t leave them white! Painting a ceiling will draw eyes up, and let your guests gaze over your entire room. Not to mention, it makes a room that much more interesting.

2. But Don’t Forget the Bottom

What’s underneath your furniture is just as important as what’s above it. Choosing a vibrant pattern for an area rug or carpet can make a boring room become a statement room in seconds.

3. Let your Lighting Speak For You

Interesting lighting makes a statement (that’s why they call it “statement lighting”). Draw attention to those high ceilings with a dramatic light structure.

4. Pattern your Shower Tile

Patterned tile in your shower is one way to complete a bathroom. It will draw eyes, so this is your time to be creative! Give your shower a relaxing spa feel, or a vibrant fun one–it’s up to you.

5. A Pop of Color in Every Room

Accessories are your home’s friend as much as they are yours when putting together an outfit. A statement pillow here, a throw there, an interesting lampshade; all of these little things can add light and intrigue to an otherwise neutral room.

6. Get A Little Whimsical

Displaying a unique item, or choosing an unexpected pattern for upholstery will liven up the room and give it a whimsical feel. Rare and individual items like these will make your house seem like your home.

Graduating college and moving out into the “real world” is difficult. There are landlords, loans, stale coffee, demanding bosses, and neckties. And that’s if you’re lucky. Leaving the cushy world of undergrad and embarking on your own is not for the faint of heart. It’s a flurry of confusing feelings and daunting hurdles. You feel so many highs and lows throughout the process, like the following:

When you’re going across the stage to receive your diploma:

When you party with all your friends the last night ever:

You galavant around campus one last time, hop a fence, and sneak into something you shouldn’t (but, like, what are they gonna do, expel us?):

Or you frolic in a fountain:

A few days later, you get your final grades and see you narrowly escaped like:

But now you need to impress employers with your skills:

But there’s so much competition and fighting everybody off is hard:

Finally, you get an interview and the employer says, “so have you had any similar experience in this field?” and you’re like:

You end up nailing the rest of the interview:

7 Quick Bedtime Habits That Will Make You Happier In The Morning

$

huffpost

Most of us already have nighttime routines and habits that we will practice before bed. These 7 quick ones however are easy to implement into your routine, and will greatly help you to wake up happier in the morning.

Check out LifeDaily’s 7 Quick Bedtime Habits That Will Make You Happier In The Morning:

1. Wash your face before bed

Whether you are a man or woman, you should wash your face every night. Even if that simply consists of rinsing your face with water, and applying moisturizer- it will make you feel a lot better, and you will wake up feeling refreshed.

2. Lay your clothes out for the next day

Knowing that you don’t have to rummage through your closet for clothes to wear in the morning will make you sleep a lot more peacefully. The less you need to worry about in the morning, the better you will feel upon opening your eyes.

3. Spend 30 minutes prior to bed free of your phone, tv, or computer

Constantly seeing things- pictures and messages right before we go to bed greatly interrupts our sleep. Do you really want to start having dreams about that picture of your friend in the restaurant they went to that night? I don’t think so.

4. Eat light and drink right at night

It’s best to not eat anything heavy before you go to sleep, because not only does it interfere with your sleep, it usually causes you to have bad dreams. Consuming alcohol won’t give you a restful sleep either, because anyone who has drank at night knows that you may think you’re sleeping well, but you actually wake up more tired.

5. Turn your alarm clock around

Having your alarm clock face you at night will only make you look at the time, and worry about how much sleep you’re going to have. To avoid being anxious or nervous about your sleep, simply turn your alarm clock away from you (if you even have one anymore- most of us just use the alarm clock on our phones).

6. Keep a journal

A great time to write is before bed. Write down three things that you’re proud of for the day and three things that you’d like to change. Pointing out your victories will keep you positive and motivated, and jotting down things you’d like to change will give you awareness of the things you want to work on.

7. Write down things you’re grateful for

This can be done in your journal as well, and it is a super important habit that you should get into because it increases your happiness by a lot! Any coach or motivational speaker is going to tell you that you should always practice being grateful, because it makes you look at the world and at your life with appreciation and optimism.

6 Simple Stretches to Improve Your Life

If you’re like me, you spend way too many hours each day sitting hunched over in a chair typing.

Over time, however, sitting too much has been shown to cause organ damage, muscle damage, bad backs, and leg disorders. It’s not really surprising then when you feel so tired and achy at the end of a long day at the office.

There are many different things you can do to combat the effects of sitting too much like using a standing desk or even using a backless chair which forces you to engage core muscles, however one of the simplest things you can do that takes only a few minutes out of your day is stretching. You might think that you have to be a yogi to experience and enjoy the benefits of a good stretch, but anyone can do these six poses no matter how busy your schedule is.

6. Half Moon

Start by standing with feet directly beneath your hips. Engage your belly and slightly tuck your tailbone. Raise your arms directly overhead with interlaced fingers. As you exhale, gently extend your hands to the right while pulling your left hand further to the right. Take deep, even breaths as you keep your neck relaxed. Repeat on the other side.

5. Upper Spinal Floor Twist

Begin by lying on your side with knees and hips stacked on top of each other bent to 90 degrees on your left side, and arms straight out resting on the ground. Your left hand may press down on the knees to help keep your knees pressed to the ground while your right shoulder attempts to lay flat on the ground. Hold this position and breathe deeply. Repeat on the other side.

4. Cat and Cow

Start with a flat back on all fours with wrists directly under the shoulders and knees directly below the hips. As you inhale, arch your back while the pelvis tilts towards the floor. Look up towards the ceiling. As you exhale, drop the head and let the spine curve upwards towards the ceiling. Each movement should match the pace of your breath. Repeat four or five more times.

3. Inverted Wall Straddle

Start by lying on your back with your legs pressed against the base of the wall. Raise your legs straight up against the wall. Your body will make a 90 degree angle with your legs against the wall. Walk the legs out slowly away from each other as far as possible without it being painful, and keep your heels against the wall. Hold this stretch for about a minute. Slowly bring your legs back to the center to release the stretch.

2. Forward Fold

Start in a standing position, then lower your hands and hinge at the hips to fold forward with a slight bend at the knees if your back is rounding or your hamstrings feel painfully tight. Drop the hands to the floor or let them hang by holding the left elbow with your right hand and right elbow with the left hand. Let the head hang and the neck relax completely. After a few deep inhalations and exhalations, hinge from the hips and keep the back flat to stand up.

1. Alternating Knee Hug

Begin by laying flat on your back with knees bent. Next, bring your left knee to your chest. Hug it, and bring the knee as close to your chest as you can without straining your body. Breath deeply and hold the pose, then release the leg. Repeat on the other side.

Remember to always listen to your body, and if something is painful, back away from the motion. Stretching is supposed to feel good and sometimes slightly uncomfortable, but never painful.

The beautiful city is home to three large ski resorts, and attracts so many tourists because of it’s annual 400 inches of snow. It is an up-and-coming winter area, which means there are less lines to fight through than Telluride or Vail. Be the first of your friends to discover this amazing place.

This Summer, You Need to Make it Your Goal to Wake up Early

I know, what kind of radical fascist am I to suggest such a wildly unpopular idea? What’s next, killing newborn kittens? But hear me out. I know waking up with the sun is a despised notion that’s often on par with walking barefoot over rusty forks. However, seeing as you’ve made it this far, my motivated reader, I’m going to assume you enjoy improving yourself and are open to wildly outlandish ideas.

I’m sure you’re waiting for me to disperse upon you all the health benefits of waking up early and all the ways it will contribute to your body’s well-being. Well, actually, there are no physical health benefits. But before you crawl back into bed, let me assure you the psychological benefits are awesome.

Author Mary Anne Radmacher famously said, “start everyday like it was on purpose.” When you wake up early and jump into your day headfirst, you feel better than when the day drags you in kicking and screaming, with a wrinkled shirt. Here’s how you should start your day full throttle.

1. Turn off the TV an hour before bed

Television and computer monitors stimulate your eyes and make it difficult for you to fall asleep. Instead of falling asleep to the laugh track of Seinfeld, make a cup of tea, read a book, and doze off with more natural means. You’ll fall asleep faster and sleep better. Open up the windows and let the cool summer air filter through your room as you doze to the sound of crickets.

2. Get a head start on your day

Summer is a refreshing, majestic season. Sure, the afternoons are hot and muggy, but the mornings are invigorating. If you can peel yourself off the sheets as the sun rises (or before it you’re a really daring soul) you’ll feel great all day. Not only are you starting the day right, you’re starting it before everybody else. To get into this habit, try setting your alarm just 15 minutes earlier than usual and slowly working your way to the early AM.

3. Put your alarm clock on the other side of the room (or in the bathroom)

Hey look! Your alarm clock is ringing right next to your toothbrush. Might as well brush your teeth now. If you have to get out of bed to turn off the alarm, you should probably just stay out of bed, walk out into the sunshine, and bask in the glory of a new day. Those first 15 minutes are the hardest, but if you can make it past them, you’ll stay awake and manage to get the head start on your day, which brings me to my next point.

4. Don’t just start it early, start it for a reason

The first day I tried waking up early, I set my alarm for 6am, got out of bed, had a cup of coffee, and went back to bed for three more hours. The second day, I walked to Dunkin, took pictures of the sun rising, and sipped my coffee while I strolled home. Then I showered, made breakfast, and read–all before work. Whether you enjoy journaling or jogging, have a reason for rising early.

5. You’ll accomplish more in a few hours than most people do all day

Do you want to be boring? No, of course you don’t. Do you want to be a healthy, engaging person with many interests? Obvi. Rather than falling into the usual 9-5 grind of work, take charge of your life by starting each day with something you enjoy doing purely for yourself. Use it as a time to engage in a hobby and explore your interests. You’ll be a happier person and have a happier summer when you do things for yourself, especially if you do them as soon as you wake up.

15 Clothing Tips No Woman Should Ever Miss

There are certain rules of thumb that every woman should follow when it comes to fashion and clothing.

These basic principles will help greatly when it comes to any wardrobe.

1. The rules of showing skin

There is one very important rule to follow when it comes to showing skin: Only expose one area of skin at a time. Example: if you are wearing a short skirt, cover your cleavage, and if you are exposing your cleavage, cover your legs.

2. Shop with a plan

Especially if you have an event coming up, don’t just wander into the store aimlessly with no direction. Know exactly what kind of dress you are looking for, and only shop for that.

3. Old things must go

If you haven’t worn it in a whole year, the rule is to toss it. There’s no point to have a bunch of never worn, or old items in your wardrobe- they will just crowd your space, and your closet should be a no-fuss and zen area.

4. Stretch new shoes painlessly

A great trick without having to break in your new shoes with your own feet is to insert plastic bags filled with water into your shoes and place them overnight in your freezer. The water will turn into ice, therefore stretching your shoes.

5. Buy high-quality cashmere

Cashmere is an expensive item to purchase, so you must pay close attention to the quality. You could easily end up with an overpaid poor quality sweater, so look for thick knitted garments, and try stretching it- if it pulls back, it’s a good type of cashmere.

6. Buy a properly fitted bra

This is an everyday necessity, so invest in better quality. Go to a store where the women help you, and fit you for a bra. It will make your clothing hang better, and it will make you feel better.

7. Have staples in your wardrobe

This includes: properly fitted and hemmed jeans, a nice scarf, a great belt, and some jewelry to accessorize with. This can make any outfit go from drab to put together in a moment’s notice.

8. Treat yourself like a queen

Beauty is connected to health more than you might think. Taking care of your health begins with getting the proper beauty sleep. What helps greatly is investing in your sleep by encasing your bed with pure silk.

9. A comfortable outfit is a must for a fun night out

Which means, no uncomfortable shoes, or high quality items you are afraid to get a little bit dirty. Make sure everything fits perfectly, and you have nothing slipping off. Carry a sturdy chain bag, so your hands can remain free.

10. Check out every angle

Anytime you are buying clothes, make sure to look at all angles of yourself in front of a mirror. Also check out your outfit in different lighting, because some garments may be see-through during the day, and in bright lights at night.

11. Have a good tailor

Tailored clothes cost so much because they fit perfectly. Investing a few extra dollars here and there in getting your clothes tailored will make a huge difference. Remember, no two bodies are exactly the same.

12. Have one small bag, one medium bag, and one large bag

This is because you’ll need different ones for different occasions, so your base should contain three different kinds for starters. After that, concentrate on which one you use the most, because it will get worn out the faster. Switch them regularly, and they will last longer.

13. Have a classic white button down shirt

This can go with almost anything, and is a staple in your wardrobe. Make sure you find the right white shirt that fits you properly, because like bras, most women purchase one that doesn’t fit.

14. Learn how to pack efficiently

Packing efficiently saves you shlepping around heavy luggage, and dealing with having to wash everything in your suitcase when you come home. It also helps to only have what you need, because having too much can really make you overwhelmed.

15. Take care of your clothes

Taking an extra minute to check out the instructions on a garment will save you time and money at the end of the day. Your clothing will last longer, and you will save money on constantly having to buy new pieces.

9 Things To Stop Expecting From Others

$

buzzsouthafrica.com

If we want to live happy and more fulfilling lives, than we have to learn to stop expecting so much from other people.

We say we don’t expect certain things from the people in our lives, but we actually do, and expecting too much is the quickest road to disappointment.

Things To Stop Expecting From Others:

1. Stop expecting others to be perfect

No one is perfect, including you, so don’t ever expect anyone to be. Everyone in your life is going to make mistakes over and over again, so avoid giving anyone a hard time when they slip up- because you wouldn’t want someone to do that to you. Plus, it makes that person feel like a letdown if they’ve disappointed you, and it can really put a strain on your relationship.

2. Stop expecting others to read your mind

The only person that really knows what goes on in your mind is you, and maybe a really good psychic- but everyone else can only guess or imagine. Just because you may be more sensitive or understanding of others, doesn’t mean that they are as well- some people just have a more finely tuned intuition.

3. Stop expecting others to always agree with you

Even best friends don’t always agree on everything, so don’t get upset when people challenge what you say, or when they simply have a difference of opinion. The world would be pretty boring if everyone agreed, and we would be like robots, and pretty monotone. Different people and different viewpoints is what makes life interesting.

4. Stop expecting others to pick you up every time you fall

Of course your close friends and family will be there for you and help you when or if you need it, but you can’t count on them to pick you up every time you fall. Maybe they have their own internals struggles going on, and it’s too much for them to carry the weight of both your problems and theirs at the moment. It doesn’t mean they don’t care, it just means you have to fight your own battles sometimes.

5. Stop expecting others to understand you

“Not everyone will understand your journey. That’s fine. It’s not theirs to make sense of – it’s yours.” – Unknown

The most important thing is that you understand you, and it is then that you won’t feel the need to gain acceptance from others. Then the fact that they just don’t get you won’t phase you anymore.

6. Stop expecting others to treat you the same way you treat them

Everyone is different, and while we wish everyone would treat us the same way that we treat them, it is just not that simple. Most people lack an understanding and relationship within themselves, which makes it difficult for them to treat us the same as we treat them. If we view their attitude from a compassionate stance, then we won’t feel as hurt when they don’t treat us so kindly.

7. Stop expecting others to always have everything together

Life throws everyone a curve ball from time to time, and it can take longer than expected sometimes for us to get back on our feet. This is why we need to be compassionate of others, and understand that everyone is going through their own things, and they’re just trying to do their best. There are times when our lives will feel like a complete mess, and other times when we’ll have it all together.

8. Stop expecting others to be the same person that they were a year ago

Everyone changes, and this is is completely normal, and our experiences and surrounding circumstances change all the time too. You can’t expect someone to be the same person you knew when you were young, or even a few years ago, because life shapes us all differently as we have different paths- one that may or may not agree with yours. It’s all about accepting, and not being judgmental.

9. Stop expecting others to reach out to you all the time

You have to show people with your actions how you wanted to be treated. If you always expect someone to call you or invite you out all the time, you may certainly be disappointed. If you find your friendship being a one-way street, where you are the one constantly making plans and an effort, then discuss it with this person and don’t expect them to just know.

By implementing these 9 Things To Stop Expecting From Others into your life, you will feel a lot better, and lead a more fulfilled existence.

How the Millennial Generation is Changing “Corporate America”

Tyler Durden have no fear: the Millennial generation is about to relieve your angst toward corporate America. Millennials, those born roughly in the range from 1975 and 2000, are currently bursting into the work force by the millions and shaking up corporate culture. Chances are if you are reading this right now, you are a Millennial and if you have a job, you’re going to be contributing to these changes.

Within the next 10 years, our generation will make up 75% of the work force and things are about to change around here. With Baby Boomers (our parents’ generation) rapidly approaching retirement, those from Gen X (currently 30/40-somethings) will move into the executive positions leaving us Millenials with leadership positions. A recent study examined how we view ourselves and what we look for in employment. Here’s what was found:

1. We don’t just want to be rich, we want to be happy

Young people entering the work force for the first time have a different set of priorities than our predecessors. We seek fulfilling jobs that will give as the opportunity to become well-rounded people. When ranking job priorities, Millennials said money was the most important factor (well, duh) but we don’t see it as THAT important comparatively speaking.

When the older generations were polled, 50% said high pay is important, compared to the 30% of Millennials. Following compensation, Millennials ranked flexibility in work schedules, and the opportunity to make a difference as other top priorities.

2. We don’t want to have a job that requires us to put on pants

Millenials are demanding more work place flexibility and mobile work arrangements. We want to have the option of working in the office on the days that demand concentration and have meetings, but also stay in our jammies on cold Monday mornings.

According to an Ernst & Young survey, employees say they would switch jobs, relocate, or take a pay-cut simply so they could have a better work/life balance. Older generations might say we’re entitled and spoiled, but maybe we’re just trying to have a healthy harmony between our career and our personal life, which our parents’ generation struggled to achieve.

3. If we don’t like our job, we’ll just up and quit

If you have a job that you aren’t crazy about, have no fear, you’ll have 19 others in the course of your career. The average American will change their job anywhere from 15-20 times in their life. You could criticize us for this, and call us spoiled. Who are we to demand our dream job when we’re only 22. But to be fair, the average American will spend 90,000 hours of their life at work, so excuse me for wanting to spend one-eighth of my existence being fulfilled.

We expect a rewarding job, and we don’t see the point of waiting out a miserable job, when there’s always the possibility of being laid off. Our parents were interested in stability and “settling down,” so many of them probably stuck with unsatisfying jobs. This could have turned out to be unprofitable for them when unemployment peaked around 2009. Without security, we have a sense of urgency in pursuing happiness.

4. There’s going to be a shift among young employees from those who NEED work to those who WANT work

We like to do things at our own pace. We lack a sense of urgency about moving out, taking a job, and struggling to pay rent each month just so we can be “independent.” Instead, we could move back home, save money, and work at Applebee’s while we wait for a job we really want.

Perhaps we’re lazy, but we know good things come to those who wait. Instead of being burdened by a job we don’t enjoy, we have alternate opportunities. This means, those who do work in the office are there because they like being a part of it.

5. We see our bosses as mentors and coaches

Back in the day, when you needed to know something, you had to trek all the way to the library (probably fight off a dinosaur), open the card catalog, and locate a book–or you could ask your superiors who probably already knew the answer. Accumulating information took a long time, and those in higher positions were seen as very wise with all their years of experience.

The internet changed that though (duh). Information is available to everyone, everywhere. It flipped how we view our employers and has made employees more independent. Now, not only are our superiors mainly giving us guidance, they are doing it over email while we sit in our kitchen without wearing pants.

6 Things You Need to Know Before Dating a Homebody

dating - thoughtcatalog

Homebody (noun): A person who enjoys the warmth and simple pleasures of being at home.

A homebody can be a difficult person to date, especially since they never want to leave the house. But if you can learn these few tips, you can make your relationship work.

1. You want to learn more excuses? Date a homebody.

A homebody is the ultimate expert in lying to avoid doing things. Friends want to go out on Friday night? They won’t just say they’re sick; they will have an extremely complicated and plausible excuse to avoid it. And they will teach you their ways.

2. Getting a homebody to agree to date you is, in itself, a great accomplishment.

A homebody agreeing to a date means that they must REALLY like you. Because, unlike for people who love to go out, this person feels most comfortable at home. And probably isn’t a pro at getting dressed up for a fancy restaurant (definitely not a pro, because it makes them uncomfortable). So if you’ve convinced them, you’ve definitely got a real connection.

3. You better love napping, Seamless, and Netflix.

These are the homebody’s three favorite things. If you can’t see yourself spending an entire day indoors binge watching an entire series of your favorite TV show while you share Chinese food and then fall asleep in the bed you never got up from this morning, then you better call it quits ASAP.

4. A homebody will not fake it to protect your feelings.

A homebody believes that life is too short to waste it spending time with people they don’t like. Which means, if they don’t like your friends, they won’t pretend to. Some relationships aren’t worth it, so they would rather stay home than spend time with your friends. If that bothers you, then it probably won’t last.

5. Underwear is the most appropriate attire for this relationship.

What would you wear when walking around your house by yourself? Underwear. Or less. And that’s what a homebody feels like all the time. Sitting at home without pants on is a homebody’s dream come true, and if you’re dating, you’re totally welcome to join in.

6. Overpriced drinks at crowded nightclubs will never excite a homebody.

So you’ll actually be able to save money by dating someone who never wants to go out. You won’t have to impress this person by buying them expensive dinners out, or lavish vacations. A pizza and a Netflix subscription will win their hearts forever.
