Mom Abandons Triplets After Giving Birth Because She Can’t Afford To Raise Them

Last year, a 32-year-old woman walked into the maternity ward of a Romanian hospital to give birth to three baby girls. Hours later, she bolted, leaving her three newborn children behind.

Now, before you jump to condemn her, know there are a few other factors at play here. The woman, who is already a mother of three, came forward shortly after and spoke about why she gave up her children in such a hasty manner.

Her name is Jeaneta Bente, and she abandoned newborns Alexandra, Isabela and Cristina in a maternity ward of a hospital in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Romania. She left them behind because she simply did not have enough money to support them.

After the story made national headlines, Jeaneta was tracked down and eventually came forward to sign the official adoption papers. Note however, that rather than signing any papers, Jeaneta had to mark them with her thumb print. This is because she is illiterate and never learned to read.

Speaking to local media, Jeaneta said: “I hope people can understand that I just don’t have any possibility to feed or care for them, but I wish them the best and hope they have a better life than I can give them.”

Jeaneta is currently living with her family in this ramshackle house where she struggles daily to put food on the table:

It’s likely the triplets will now go to a children’s home, where they’ll stay until a suitable foster family is found. This isn’t the first case of children being abandoned like this.

That same Romanian hospital saw 25 other cases of mothers abandoning their children in 2015.

The poverty crisis there is substantial and there is simply not enough to go around.
