When a person loses a limb, the obvious next step is getting a prosthetic limb to get mobility and freedom back, however, when rescuers found a 7-month-old baby elephant with a missing leg, they figured she’d never survive.
At just a few months old, baby Mosha the elephant lost her front left leg after she stepped on a landmine on the Burmese border. When rescuers found the 1,300-pound baby, she was struggling to get around and figured she would die from the injury.
Thankfully, the staff from the Friends of the Asian Elephant foundation in Thailand refused to give up on the baby, who was desperately trying to stay alive, and got to work figuring out how they could make the first prosthetic limb for an elephant.
However, making a prosthetic limb for an elephant is much more difficult than it is for people, as it has to be able to support Mosha, who now weighs over 4,000 pounds.
After lots of tests and trials, however, the group was finally able to fit Mosha with her own custom prosthetic leg, and is already able to move around with much less pain.
In order to help other elephants who would normally be left to die, the foundation is starting a prosthesis factory to its facility to make the process more affordable and efficient.
