Mom Arrested For Leaving Kids Home Alone While She Picked Up Take-Out

There’s one big decision parents face when their children enter their children enter the pre-teen years.

Actually, that’s not entirely true. There isn’t just ONE big decision parents face. There are more like a hundred thousand big decisions parents make, but one stands out among the rest.

At what age is it okay to leave your child home alone and how long should one leave the kids alone for?

For every parent, the answer varies. Some kids can stay home alone for a short while from a young age, while others require more time to mature. In the case of one Maryland family, they had the law enforcement and nosy neighbors make this decision for them.

The family was on vacation in Delaware when Mom decided it would be okay to run out to pick up take-out and leave her kids home alone for a short time. According to an article in the USA Today, Susan Terrillion left her 8- and 9-year-old kids home alone in their vacation rental while she ran out to pick up some food.

The article states a witness “made contact” with the children when the family dogs ran into the road in front of his vehicle.

After stopping to help the children, he discovered they were alone and, apparently, felt the need to call the police.

When police learned Terrillion had left the children alone for at least 45 minutes, she was arrested, charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of her children, and released on $500 unsecured bail.

But did somebody overreact to an innocuous situation?

After all, Delaware doesn’t have set rules on how old a child must be to stay home alone. This is one of those cases where it’s better to leave it up to the parents. And it was the dog that wanted to play in the street, not the kids (these things happen sometimes).

Then again, maybe Mom should have been more careful and made sure the dog couldn’t get out before she left the premises.

At least she didn’t leave any toddlers home alone so she could play Pokemon Go.

Whatever the case may be, it’s hard to judge without knowing all the details of the case. But we know that this won’t stop you from sharing our opinion anyway so please tell us your thoughts on the subject and don’t forget to SHARE with another opinionated parent who might have something to say.
