Today’s teenagers are growing up in a completely different world than older generations and with that comes an entirely new way to get themselves in trouble.
It might not seem fair for a student to get in trouble for sharing concerns about their school, but it’s happening more and more thanks to just about every high schooler in the country owning a cell phone. It’s practically impossible for a school’s administration to keep track of what students share on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and more, but every once in a while they’ll take notice and shut it down immediately.
That’s exactly what happened when Hazel Juco of Westland, Michigan snapped a photo of dirty-looking water in one of her high school’s women’s room.
“I just took a picture of it. And then in my newspaper class I talked about it with them,” the senior at John Glenn High School told WXYZ. She also posted the photo on Facebook and Twitter. “I always hope that someone will see it and want to help us,” said Juco. “Because our school obviously doesn’t have money.”
Although Juco believed she was just exercising her right to freedom of speech, she was quickly called to the principal’s office. “They told me I was being suspended, OSS (Out of School Suspension). It is inappropriate use of electronics in the restroom,”Juco told WXYZ.
However, Juco believes she was just punished for exposing a major problem, as many other students take photos in the bathroom and never get in trouble for it.
What happened next was truly amazing and it just goes to show that sometimes breaking the rules can end in a way you never expected.
Do you think this girl should have been suspended for three days for sharing this photo?
