The pain of losing a child is a loss most can’t comprehend.
Sadly, for Carole Adler, it’s an ache she is too familiar with. Early last year, she lost her son Taylor Thyfault. He was an exceptional young man with ambitions and goals. By age 21, he was already an army veteran on his way to completing Cadet Training with Colorado State Patrol.
Unfortunately, the suspect missed the stop sticks and crashed into both troopers. Rushing was critically injured and Thyfault died on the scene.
“Every day, it hits me like a ton of bricks, when I can’t text him,” Adler said. “We’re just that close. Everything that happened in his life was in my life.”
Sergeant Kell Hulsey from the Greeley Police Department had recently gotten a new phone for work. At first, he ignored the messages, assuming it was the wrong number. However, late one night, he got the urge to answer.
“So I sent a text back and identified myself, and said ‘I’m with the Greeley Police Department, and I don’t think your texts are going where you think they are,'” he texted.
Seconds later, Adler identified herself as Taylor Thyfault’s mom. Sgt. Hulsey immediately offered to request a new phone number. Adler asked him to keep the number because he was doing the job Thyfault dreamed about doing.
Now, the two will text occasionally. Adler will check on Sgt. Hulsey, ask if he’s safe, and hear how the job is going. Thyfault is their connection and both have found peace in the situation.
