When firefighter Mike Thawley found an abandoned, sick puppy tied to a metal pipe in the rain his heart sunk.

Thawley, who works with the Sacramento Fire Department, immediately picked her up and brought her back to Fire Station 14 to dry the dogoff and clean her up. After the sick puppy was warm, Thawley took her to the Front Street Animal Shelter, where employees learned she was a young pit bull and named her “Chunkie.”

Chunkie was suffering from non-contagious mange that effects her coat, but with some treatment, she would be ok. Yet, even after Thawley knew that Chunkie was in good hands with the shelter, he was still worried about her. So, the following day Thawley went back to the shelter to see how Chunkie was doing.

Front Street caught the heartwarming reunion on camera and even though they only met briefly for one day, it was incredible how Chunkie remembered Thawley.

“As you can see from the video, she is very grateful!” Front Street officials wrote on Facebook. Chunkie knows that because of Thawley’s compassion, she is safe and healthy and after speaking with his family, he decided to foster the pup.

“After asking the wife and kids, we decided to foster her for a bit,” Thawley told FOX40. The firefighter says he already has a couple of other dogs at home and wants to see how Chunkie mixes with the others. Chunkie is still owned by the shelter, but Thawley’s daughter says, “She is going to be ours.”

Chunkie is still owned by the shelter, but Thawley’s daughter says, “She is going to be ours.” Chunkie’s mange has been cleared up with the medication, and she’ll be looking like a regular dog very soon, according to the shelter’s spokesperson Bobby Mann.
