A Nebraska woman received more than she bargained for when she recently bought a wooden box from the Salvation Army.
She bought the mysterious box for $2.99 on Monday and discovered soon after that the top was “stuck.”
“We came across this box and I really like boxes and stuff,” Marlene Moore told KETV. “And I picked it up to check it out and everything and I couldn’t get it open.”
The reason why the lid wouldn’t come off as because the box was actually an urn. After unscrewing the bottom, the mystery deepened when she discovered a bag of ashes inside.
“I didn’t expect to find a box full of ashes,” she said. “I really didn’t.”
“This is by far the most bizarre thing we have come across,” Moore’s friend Philip Walter added.
A zip-lock bag of cremated remains was inside the box, with no identification except for the name Anderson on the bottom of the box.
“I kind of felt obligated to try to find this family that it belongs to and everything,” Moore said. “It’s the only right thing to do.”
Moore took to social media at that point, tracking down funeral homes and asking around the Salvation Army to see who donated the strange object. Not 24 hours after Moore bought it from the store, the Salvation Army found out whose it was.
Wade Anderson recently moved from Nebraska to Florida, and in the shuffle of the move, the box was accidentally placed with other items being donated to the Salvation Army.
“If it’s a wooden box, then it’s my dog,” Wade Anderson told KETV.
Anderson lost his beloved pooch a few months ago, and thanks to great record-keeping, Salvation Army employees were able to figure out when the item was donated, and who it came from.
Anderson said he’s grateful somebody like Moore found it.
“Many thanks,” Anderson said. “I’m so lucky to have it be purchased by someone that was so thoughtful and cared enough to get it back to the right person and owner.”
The Salvation Army has been in contact with Anderson. They said they’re going to ship the urn back to him in Florida. You can hear the whole story below:
We’re happy to see Anderson will soon be reunited with the remains of his beloved animal. If you enjoyed this story, please SHARE with friends and family.
