Dogs Destined For Life Of Lab Testing Are Saved By Hidden Cameras

[PETA]

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is an agency that investigates and exposes all the injustices that are happening beneath our noses.

Of course, we all know this kind of stuff happens routinely, but we continue to turn a blind eye while we lather our heads in bargain brand shampoo and pretend we aren’t aware that those products are being tested on bunnies. As awful as testing soap on rabbits may be, it pales in comparison to what some laboratories in the United States and France were doing to man’s best friend.

Recent footage obtained by PETA reveals that dogs were purposely being bred to develop crippling muscle diseases so they could further be tested.

“For 35 years, experimenter Joe Kornegay has been using public funds to breed colonies of dogs–most recently at Texas A&M University–with painful and debilitating muscular dystrophy, including severe Duchenne muscular dystrophy,” the video states.

This research an animal testing was all being done in the name of finding a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which, unfortunately, still has no cure. It’s time to redirect funds and find a cure in a humane way that does not involve animal testing.

If you agree that it’s time to research the problem without creating another, please SHARE this story!

They say a mother’s love knows no bounds – and that certainly couldn’t be truer in the animal kingdom.

Whether we’re talking about a giant newborn like this elephant who got herself into a scary situation or a baby bird trying to leave the nest for the first time, in nature, it always seems like mom and dad are around to help them when they fall, and teach them the ways of the world.

We’ve seen animals do some pretty amazing things for their little ones, but nothing made my heart skip a beat like the following video of a mother dog going above and beyond for her tiny pups.

Screen Shot 2015-12-30 at 12.11.35 PM

[YouTube]

The video was filmed in Chennai, South India after devastating rainfall, believed to be the result of El Niño phenomenon, flooded the coast. The disaster was called the costliest of 2015, and after seeing the following footage, it’s easy to understand why. Although the clip focuses on a mother dog and her family, it’s not hard to see the mess that the flooding left behind.

Srinivasan Raghunathan started filming the street dog after he saw her take notice to her young pups crying in the distance. As you can see, the stray doesn’t hesitate to dive into the treacherous flood waters to swim toward her newborns.

Once she reaches the terrified puppies, she grabs ahold of them and uses all of her strength to swim across the waterway and bring them to safety.

It’s impossible not to feel good after watching this video. We’re so happy this mother dog and her puppies are ok!

A stray named Missy got a second chance at life after animal caretakers spotted her in dire conditions and did something about it.

The poor pooch roamed the streets of India and had a large tumor growing near her rear. Missy had picked up a cancerous sexually transmissible disease called canine transmissible venereal tumor. Fortunately, her rescuers Animal Aid Unlimited, India spotted the stray and followed her, monitoring her behavior.

[Animal Aid Unlimited, India]
[Animal Aid Unlimited, India]
Rescuers knew they might not be able to save the dog. The tumor had advanced to such a dramatic point that there wasn’t much hope. Worse, they feared the tumor may have burst, causing incredible pains for the dog.

[Animal Aid Unlimited, India]
[Animal Aid Unlimited, India]
After being able to take a close look at Missy, rescue workers were worried that the advanced cancer was incurable… The rescue workers debated euthanasia, but Missy has such a strong life-force that they knew they had to give her a chance.

After 4 months of chemotherapy, nursing care and love, the cancer has disappeared and her overall health is robust.

Take a look at Missy’s alarming and inspiring story and please SHARE with friends and family.

Woman Charged After Abandoning Her Dog With A 46-Pound Tumor

Last May, a good samaritan dropped a Golden Retriever off at a local animal shelter after explaining that she found the dog wandering alone on a beach in Newport California.

Animal control officer Valerie Schomburg and the staff at the Newport Beach Animal Shelter could tell the dog desperately needed help as he had a 46-pound tumor protruding from his side. They assumed it was the reason his previous owner abandoned him, but focused on helping the dog they renamed Henry by getting him into surgery to remove the tumor, which amounted for about half of his weight and was making it impossible to walk.

He immediately started to improve after his surgery and could finally move around, and found a new home with a foster family while undergoing treatment for cancer. Yet in the months that have passed since finally getting the care he desperately needed, police discovered the ‘good samaritan’ that brought Henry in, Sherri Haughton, was actually Henry’s original owner.

Now the 52-year-old is facing two years in prison if convicted after the Orange County District Attorney charged her with four misdemeanor counts, including animal endangerment and failure to care for an animal. Henry’s condition was inexcusable considering there are many options for pet owners who can’t afford medical care for their animals. “There’s places to get financial help to pay for treatment,” Schomburg said.

Fox Recovers After Being Shot In The Neck With A Giant Arrow

Foxes are usually pretty sneaky animals and are good at staying out of site, which is why some UK locals from Surrey were surprised to see a fox walking around the neighborhood.

However, when they got a closer look, they realized the animal was actually injured and had a massive arrow stuck through its neck. It was clear the animal didn’t have much time left, so they quickly called rescuers from the Leatherhead Wildlife Foundation.

Besides a small complication when the fox got stuck in a bush, the team quickly rescued the poor animal, and rushed her to Emma Lloret Avella, the foundation’s veterinarian. Emma performed emergency surgery to remove the arrow and fix the damage left behind in the two open holes in her neck.

“She was eating straight away after surgery, she was a lot more comfortable without the arrow,” Emma said. “She definitely would have died without the surgery, it would have been a very slow, painful death. She’s going to make a full recovery, she’s looking really great.”

The foundation then reported the incident to the RSPCA and the police, but unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to tell who shot the arrow. “If anyone sees anything like this it’s very important to contact a local animal charity or the RSPCA,” said Simon Cowell, the foundation’s founder.

Parents Slam Mom For Buying 350 Christmas Presents For Kids

Christmas is a time when all parents get to spoil their kids with presents for no reason, but parents are slamming one mom who they claim is spoiling her kids rotten.

For UK mom-of-three Emma Tapping, Christmas is one of the biggest days of the year, which she starts planning for months in advance. This year, Tapping revealed she spent about £2,000, or about 2,500 U.S. Dollars, to buy her kids 350 Christmas presents, and parents are slamming her for spoiling her kids and being so wasteful.

“Another year of hard graft, saving and planning. Another year of my family making me proud everyday. They deserve a great Christmas. The haters will hate but nothing and no one will change how I do Christmas,” Tapping wrote on Facebook along with a picture of her family’s Christmas tree, which is practically hidden behind the giant wall of wrapped gifts.

In order to amass such a large amount of gifts, Tapping starts wrapping gifts in August, and last year, the stress of getting so many gifts together actually landed her in the hospital. Many parents can’t understand why Tapping would put herself through such stress and risk her children becoming spoiled and entitled, but she doesn’t think it’s excessive. “I think if I was doing it 365 days a year I’d be spoiling them.”

“Why should parents who graft their arses off be made to feel bad because they buy their kids presents. There’s 365 days in a year to gather some prezzies up. I will NEVER feel bad for giving my kids a good Christmas,” the unapologetic mom wrote on her Facebook. “LOTS of presents, LOTS of food and drink, LOTS of family time, LOTS of love. If ya don’t like it. Tough sh*t!”

Two Boys Beg Dad To Help A Man In A Wheelchair Struggling To Shovel

Normally, when parents try to get their children to clean up their own messes, it’s like pulling teeth, which is why one Wisconsin dad was so stunned when his two little boys volunteered to help clean up a total stranger’s mess.

Milwaukee dad Daniel Medina was driving home one evening with his 6- and 10-year-old sons and was hard at work concentrating on the snowy road when his sons started begging him to pull over. Just as they were about to drive past, the two boys spotted a man in his wheelchair struggling to shovel snow from his driveway and knew they had to help.

“I didn’t even see the guy because I was concentrating on driving in the snow,” Medina said. “My oldest, Daniel, said, ‘Pull over, let’s go help him.’ So I said, ‘OK, let’s go.’ We pulled up next to him, and Daniel asked if he had any extra shovels.”

For the next 45 minutes, Medina and his sons shoveled in the cold for a total stranger. “He was grateful,” Medina said. “He kept telling us thanks and kind of supervised us, made sure we dug out the bus stop in the corner, and also his car because he had a doctor’s appointment the next day.”

It was an extremely proud moment for Medina, who later posted a picture of his sons’ hard at work on his Facebook. “It just made me happy,” he said. “They know to hold doors for people and all their manners.” And while Medina makes sure to teach his sons manners, he suspects they were so determined to help this stranger because their mother, who lives in Mexico, is in a wheelchair. “He would hope that someone would help her if she needed it,” Medina said about his oldest son.

It’s a scam you wouldn’t expect, one harvested not by masterminds, but those observant enough to see the obvious.

After alarming security footage was obtained from a Florida police station, the Brower County Sheriff’s Officer is warning why you need to always lock your doors at the pump.

The footage shows victim Elvia McCormick pull up her car to the pump at her local gas station. Her gas tank is on the passenger side of her car, leaving her driver’s side door exposed and facing outward, a kay point to note when you see what happens next.

[Sheriff's Office Broward County]
[Sheriff’s Office Broward County]
While McCormick is busy fiddling with the pump’s pay station, a silver Toyota pulls up alongside her. Who would stop to think the car is suspicious? Not Elvie and not many other people rushing to reach the end of their errands like Elvie was that day.

[Sheriff's Office Broward County]
[Sheriff’s Office Broward County]
But as Elvie had her back turned, a man in the car beside her did not. He slipped from his car, opened her driver’s door, snatched her purse, and was back in his own car without a moment’s hesitation. The crooks had been waiting for an unobservant person with a passenger side tank to pull up to that exact pump. They had it planned, knew what they were doing, and had it perfectly executed.

Very rarely do we come across a story where bad service gives way to a great tip. Then again, never before have Makenzie and Steven Schultz made headlines.

The married couple was celebrating their 6th wedding anniversary at a restaurant that had horrible service, so bad in fact, that the two took to Facebook afterwards.

“It took 20 minutes to get water, 40 minutes for an appetizer, and over an hour for our entree,” Mackenzie writes on Facebook. But she didn’t take to social media to vent her frustrations, nor did she hop online to demand a redo from the restaurant.

[MAKENZIE SCHULTZ / FACEBOOK]
[MAKENZIE SCHULTZ / FACEBOOK]
Instead, this charming chap jumped on social media to publically give herself a pat on the back. She told about how awful the service was, and despite the long wait times, the couple still left a $100 tip. There’s nothing like spreading forth the love and compassion while you publically show the world what a wonderful human you are.

[MAKENZIE SCHULTZ / FACEBOOK]
[MAKENZIE SCHULTZ / FACEBOOK]
Not only did they share their story on Facebook, they also had their generosity picked up by local media outlets. Then, national media outlets went on to publically give the two that pat on the back they so clearly deserved for their selfless and (dare we say) humble deed.

Take a look at the news story below and please SHARE with friends and family (it’s what Mackenzie and Steven would want you to do).

Little Boy Bids An Emotional Farewell To His 17-Year-Old Dog At The Vet

“Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more.”

The great William Shakespeare gave us this truth, spoken through the mouth of Macbeth, in 1623. The quote has since been pondered by professors, poets, and the occasional lit major, loitering in smoke-filled basements and passing the prose.

An 8-year-old boy featured in the most heartbreaking viral video we’ve seen all week felt those words too deeply on his young soul. While he may be too young to appreciate Shakespeare’s poetry, he certainly isn’t too young to know the truth contained.

[Youtube]
[Youtube]
“Life is but a walking shadow,” a fleeting moment in time, and in the blink of an eye, it is no more. Life struts at his steady pace, cycling his circles around the sun, before that final set on the evening of our lives.

Our little friend felt this cruel, blunt edge of death when he had to say goodbye to BaoBao, the best friend he’s had by his side his whole life. BaoBao has had a long life, a span of 17 years which exceeds his predicted life expectancy by three birthdays.

When BaoBao was hit by a car, the family had to make the decision to put him down. And thus, our little lover of life discovered the cruelest truth of all: that it does not last forever.

[YouTube]
[YouTube]
But life is valuable and precious because it is fleeting. We all know this. It is nothing but a beautiful symphony of chaos that lasts as long as a glimpse before the final curtain falls and we know it’s warmth no longer.

So friends, tonight, appreciate the gift of life with which you’ve been blessed. Eat, drink, be merry, and remember that life is beautiful, but it is short. And while you’re at it, please SHARE this story with friends and family.

In emergency situations, there’s usually just a few short seconds to make a decision that will determine if someone will live or die.

When one Tennessee mom realized her 2-month-old baby stopped breathing, she was forced to make a split-second decision to not go to the hospital, and thankfully, that choice is the reason her baby boy is still alive right now.

Mom Carisa Young was driving her 2-month-old son Jaiden, who has a twin sister, to the doctor because she feared he had a cold when she suddenly realized he stopped breathing. “I was scared. I didn’t know what was going on. I was scared,” Young said. “I mean, it was my baby.”

Young knew they were at least 20 minutes from any medical help or hospitals and knew her son wouldn’t make it that long. In desperation, Young rushed to the nearest elementary school since they would have a school nurse and prayed that they would be able to revive her baby.

“When you get here, you expect it to be one of our students,” said teacher George Ellis, who was stunned to see the baby. The teachers managed to start Jaiden’s heart with an AED device, but when he stopped breathing a second time, they tried again. Luckily, he started breathing again and is now in a children’s hospital recovering. Doctors expect the baby to make a full recovery and will even be home for Christmas. “If he comes home for Christmas, that will be all I need,” Young said.

7-year-old Olivia Valli became a hero last month after she pulled her two younger brothers to safety and indirectly saved her mother’s life.

The child was with her two brothers, and mother Amber Valli, driving down a road in Woolmar, Australia. However, tragedy struck and her mother swerved off the road, causing the car to flip and land upside down.

[Amber Valli]
[Amber Valli]
Just moments after the accident, Olivia sprang into action. She knew 3-year-old Mason and 2-year-old Flynn were both strapped into their car seats. Olivia unbuckled the boys and pulled them one by one out of the car. Bear in mind, this all came moments after she was in a tragic car accident.

[Amber Valli]
[Amber Valli]
But the story gets even more incredible. Because the little girl pulled her brothers out of the car, rescuers were able to jump immediately into action in the driver’s seat when they arrived on the scene. That’s where Mom, Amber, was stuck and injured. Without Olivia’s help, rescuers would have spent precious seconds getting the boys out first, time that could have cost Amber her life.

[Amber Valli]
[Amber Valli]
But Amber didn’t lose her life because the first responders didn’t lose a minute getting to her. Amber was admitted to the hospital and has made a full recovery. Meanwhile, Olivia is being hailed a hero for her good deed.

One of the best things about the Christmas season is waking up each morning and seeing a beautifully decorated tree covered in ornaments collected over your lifetime.

When one Australian woman named Cheryl woke up this past Sunday morning and walked into her living room, she began looking at all the lights and ornaments and noticed there was something on her tree that didn’t quite belong.

As she looked closer, she realized a piece of tinsel was actually a snake, and because Australia is home to a variety of extremely venomous snakes, she decided to call a snake catcher instead of trying to grab it herself. “She didn’t panic, she just took a photo and sent it to the snake catcher, me,” Barry Goldsmith said.

Thankfully, Cheryl didn’t try to get rid of the animal herself, because it ended up being a Tiger snake, which is venomous and can be fatal if bitten. “20 minutes later I had the little bugger in a bag,” Goldsmith said. “I’ve found snakes around the base of the Christmas tree before, but never in the tree. It did look a bit like tinsel! It was a very pretty snake. She was very sensible. The snake didn’t want to hurt me – snakes only bite when they’re scared or hurt.”

Police officers go above and beyond to keep every member of their community, even those who have four legs and a tail, safe from harm.

While most people spent their Saturday nights with family in the warmth of their homes, Indianapolis Police Officer Scott Charleswood spent the night driving around in his patrol car. And when he received a call about a faint cry coming from a dumpster, he knew he had to investigate because whatever was making the noise wouldn’t last long in the frigid temperatures.

Charleswood looked in the dumpster and was stunned to find a litter of seven newborn puppies that still had their umbilical stumps attached. He quickly gathered the animals from the dumpster and wrapped them up in his warm winter coat to get them warm.

After getting the puppies warm in his car, he then personally found them a foster home for the night and delivered them. Every Dog Counts Rescue has since taken over their care, and they are amazed at how well the puppies are doing considering they were practically frozen when found. “So far all are accepting the bottle and eating well. Truly is AMAZING!!” the rescue said.

Dog Gets Adopted After Saving Foster Family From A Burglar

A dog isn’t just a pet, a dog becomes a beloved member of the family. And when they pass away, it can be just as traumatic and painful as when any other family member dies.

And when Philadelphia-based couple Nick Franco and Kari MacDonald’s beloved dog passed away last March, they were completely devastated. “We were really not wanting to open our hearts and bring another dog in full-time,” Franco said. “It was just too soon.”

The couple wasn’t ready for a new dog, but when they heard a pit bull named Benny from the Pennsylvania SPCA was in need of a foster home, they decided they could temporarily open their home and their hearts so he wouldn’t have to wait for his forever home in a shelter.

“We both fell in love with him pretty quickly — second or third day,” Franco said about the 3-year-old, who had been raised in an abusive and illegal fighting operation. “We were already teetering on the edge of adopting him.” But the couple knew they had to make Benny a permanent part of their lives when he saved them from a burglar.

Recently, the couple took Benny on a shopping trip and noticed he was acting a little strange and was pulling on the leash more than normal when they got home. “We noticed some things were in disarray, but our first thought was we knocked something over as we were leaving,” said Franco, who couldn’t figure out why Benny was sniffing the floor, pacing around the house, and was growling. “As this is happening, I looked around and realized we had been burglarized.”

However, they realized the intruder was still in their house when they heard the floor creak upstairs. “Get out of my house right now. My dog is going to come upstairs. He’s not happy,” Franco yelled up. Thankfully, the threat was enough to scare the burglar, who left the stolen items and disappeared after jumping out a window. “It just clicked at that moment,” Franco said. “There was no way we were not going to adopt him.”

School can be an incredibly challenging place for anyone seen as different or anyone who doesn’t have the newest clothes or accessories since they’re easy targets for bullies.

However, when students from Somerset High School noticed their classmate, J.R. Gilbert, who is a special needs student, was wearing old shoes that were two sizes too small, they decided to come together and do something nice for him instead of bully him about it.

Gilbert wears the same size 10 boots to school every single day, and one day, students Roger Villegas, Salvador Solis, and Martin Ramos realized how small the shoes were, and asked Gilbert what his actual shoe size was. When they heard he actually needed size 13 shoes, they decided to surprise him with shoes that fit.

The group of boys and the rest of the class pitched in to buy Gilbert two new pairs of shoes and surprised him with his gifts just before Christmas break. Gilbert was stunned by the gifts and couldn’t stop smiling when he realized what his classmates did for him.

And Gilbert’s family was touched when they found out what students did for him. “We found out from JR’s family that he does have shoes that fit him, but he refuses to stop wearing the boots of his beloved grandfather, since his grandfather can no longer wear them,” the school explained. Thankfully, Gilbert now has two pairs of shoes that actually fit that he is now willing to wear.

When most kids sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what they want for Christmas, they usually ask for the popular must-have toy of the season.

However, when five-year-old Rylinn Ross from Nebraska visited Santa Clause at the mall, all she asked for was her dad. “Can you bring my daddy home?” Rylinn asked. Her six-year-old sister Aurora instead asked for a Baby Alive doll, since she didn’t even think Santa could bring her dad, who was deployed in South Korea, home for Christmas.

Yet before Santa said goodbye to the two sisters, he explained he did actually have a special gift waiting for them. “You know what, we’ll see what we can do with the Baby Alive,” Santa said. “But I think the elves sent me something special in the sleigh this time.”

As the girls sat waiting on Santa’s lap, they turned and saw their dad Jacob walking out from behind the giant slay. Jacob, a staff sergeant in the Air Force, has been stationed in South Korea for the past seven months and has only seen his daughters on FaceTime, so the girls were understandably overwhelmed when they realized he made it home for Christmas.

“We’ve known that I’ll be home for the holidays for a couple months now,” said Jacob, who gets to stay home for 28 days before heading back to South Korea. But instead of telling them, he and his wife Alleasha decided it would be even better if Santa got to be the one to tell the girls. “Santa bringed Daddy home,” Rylinn said after the surprise reunion.

It started when workers at the Homeless Animal Adoption League (HAAL) received a report of kittens alone on the side of the road. They don’t usually make roadside pickups, but on this particular night, it was cold and rainy, so they made an exception.

However, when the rescuers showed up to the scene, they found the kittens weren’t abandoned after all. Sleeping in a blue plastic bin, they found the kittens nuzzled up against a mother cat. They brought the family into the shelter and found themselves with an unexpected shock when they took a look at the cats’ health measurements.

It turns out that mama cat wasn’t a mother at all. She was actually a he. Rescuers think the male cat may be related, either as a father or from a previous litter. Regardless, he stepped up to the challenge of motherhood when duty called.

Rescuers appropriately named him Mrs. Doubtfire because the name fits so well. The kittens aren’t hungry and the “mother” is healthy so everyone is happy.

Every now and then, we’ll come across a story about a case of mistaken animal identity.

Whether it’s a family’s new puppy who turns out to be a fox or a tiny creature who grows into something completely unexpected, these things are bound to happen every once in a while. However, if there’s anyone who should be able to tell the difference between a housepet and a wild animal, it’s those people who work in the animal care industry.

That’s why we can’t believe the story of a Shiba Inu dog from Kentucky who went missing from her family’s home. Copper was later discovered by a local police officer, who brought the dog to a shelter and was shocked to hear that she was actually a coyote… or so they thought.

The shelter gave the cop two options: either return the animal to the wild or put her to sleep. Thankfully, he chose the former, but it wasn’t until after Copper was released that the officer recognized her face on a “Missing” sign by owner Lori Goodlett, that he realized the terrible mistake.

Goodlett was heartbroken to lose her dog of 11 years, but luckily her story didn’t end there. Check out the video below:

You’ll often hear about our brave soldiers returning home after deployment and adding a new furry friend to their family.

Therapy dogs can be extremely beneficial for military men and women dealing with symptoms of PTSD or physical disabilities, but it’s not very often we hear about a story like Marine Craig Grossi and his new best friend.

While on deployment in the Sangin District of Afghanistan, Grossi and his fellow soldiers were attacked by Taliban. “It was pretty fierce for a couple of days, and I was so preoccupied defending myself,” Grossi told The Dodo.

Yet though the heartache came an unexpected surprise. Once the fighting commenced, Grossi discovered a small, funny looking dog with funny legs.

“He was as confident as he was little,” Grossi told The Dodo. “‘He’s got it figured out,’ I thought.” Unfortunately, the Marine was not allowed to approach the dog, even though it was unlike most dogs who travel in packs and are vicious.

That’s when Grossi knew he had to find a way to break military protocol and help the little dog. “Despite being from one of the harshest environments in the world, he managed to maintain a positive attitude,” Grossi wrote on the website where he shares his adventures after the military with his new sidekick.

“Craig was a member of an elite team of Marines. Sangin was his most dangerous assignment, not the place he thought he would meet his first dog,” he wrote on FredTheAfghan.com.

“With some proper scheming and a lot of help, Craig was able to send Fred home to his family while he completed his tour. How he was able to do this is the subject of one of the greatest stories you’ll ever hear,” he continued.

Check out the amazing story of this Marine and Fred the Afghan, two heroes who survived the unthinkable and continue to inspire others.
