5 Ways Going Abroad Will Change Your Life

$

Of all my college experiences, my time abroad was by far the best thing I ever decided to do. It quite literally changed my life. Like others, I was afraid of missing out on things on campus, missing my friends and family, and afraid of being set back with my courses and credits.

With enough planning and preparation, however, almost any issue can be worked out. And as for missing out on campus life, don’t worry, it will still be there when you get back.

If you still need some convincing, take a look at the 5 ways studying abroad will change your life.

5. You get to experience a new way of thinking and living.

No matter how much you’ve previously traveled, nothing will prepare you for actually living in another country with a completely new culture for a semester. Even if the country you go to speaks the same language as your native country, they will have an entirely different way of living, talking, and interacting.

While it can be shocking at first, it’s refreshing to see how other people live, and you’ll adopt some of those values as your own for the rest of your life.

4. It will humble you.

When living at school, it’s easy to think that the world starts and stops on campus. Traveling around the world will remind you how small your life and problems actually are in comparison.

You may have to live without the comforts of home for the first time, and it will make you appreciate things we take for granted, like having a laundry dryer to dry your clothes.

3. It will empower you.

You’re practically guaranteed to face difficult situations and new challenges while abroad, but you have no choice but to deal with them. With no one but yourself, and possibly a few new friends, you’ll learn to navigate a new city and handle the unexpected. It will feel scary, but you’ll feel empowered as you realize you’re more capable than you thought you were.

2. You’ll gain life-long friendships.

The friends and relationships that I made while abroad are still some of my closest and best relationships to this day.

I made a point of meeting people beside other American students studying abroad, and it transformed my experience. Not only was their local knowledge useful in directing me to the best beaches, bars, and neighborhoods, but they became genuine friends who helped show me a different way of living.

1. You’ll learn what it means to trust.

As I mentioned above, you will encounter surprises and difficult situations that you have little to no control over. However, instead of finding the solution in your smartphone, you’ll have to trust the people around you and trust that things will be ok.

When I found myself lost and alone on the wrong bus line, I had to trust a stranger to get to my intended location. I was shocked as the bus driver actually went off route to drive me where I needed to go, and was reminded that every once in a while you have to put your trust in others.

Why is this cat petting a pig?

A German miniature pig owner shared a video of one of her prized mini-hogs receiving a naptime snuggle and gentle stroking from the family cat.

The video was posted to Youtube by Nicolle von Eberkopf and shows miniature pig Moritz taking a snore-filled snooze while his feline buddy cuddles him and strokes his face. “Good friends monitor your sleep!” she wrote in the video’s title.

This left us here at Life Daily questioning how this adorable encounter came about. What happened to poor Mr. Pig that left him distressed and seeking comfort from the cat?

He can’t watch his favorite show on Netflix:

Beau is an 11-week-old corgi who isn’t too fond of hanging around in the kitchen while his owner is out for the day.

Beau’s owners name is Dan McLaughlin, and Dan is an animal lover who bought Beau who was part of a liter of 4 puppies.

Everyday when Dan would leave the house, he would put Beau in the kitchen behind the “dog-proof” gate. And he began to notice that when he came home Beau was always out and roaming the house.

Determined to find out what his adorable puppy was up to, Dan installed cameras right near the kitchen, and decided to find out just how Beau was escaping.

It’s Not You. How Claw Machines Are Rigged

Ever wonder why you never win a stuffed animal at the claw machine?

Despite inserting many quarters, and trying to perfectly position that claw with steady pressure, you still fail to grab a plush toy.

We are here to tell you that it is not your imagination that those stuffed animals are hard to grab, and after watching a video by Vox we now know why.

They say the claw is programmed to grab tightly only part of the time, and this isn’t a closely kept secret either.

It is publicly available information pulled straight from the instruction guides for the biggest claw games out there.

Black Tie Toys’ Advanced Crane Machine, page 8, section “Claw Strength”:

The machine’s owner can adjust the strength of the claw beforehand so its grip is only strong a fraction of the time, and they can manually adjust the “dropping skill” as well, meaning that on a given number of times, the claw will drop a prize that it’s grabbed before it’s given to you.

The machines also enable the owner to select a desired level of profit and then automatically adjust the claw strength to make sure that players are only winning a limited number of times!

Tiny One Week Old Elephant Makes a Splash During Playtime

While romping around in mud might be a human mother’s playtime nightmare, elephants use the messy mud to cool them down, and protect their bodies from the sun’s rays.

Even though this was the first time Nandita, the one-week-old Asian elephant calf, got to experience a mud bath, she wasted no time getting down and dirty.

“All of the family really look out for her, and mum Thi in particular is never far away – always there to lend a helping trunk should Nandita need a bit of mud wiping away from her eyes and ears,” Andy Mckenzie, Chester Zoo’s team manager of elephants, said.

This one week old elephant calf named Nandita enjoys a messy mud bath at Chester Zoo.

The zoo hopes that the recent arrival of Nandita can help raise more awareness of the species which, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), faces a very high risk of extinction.

The newborn was joined by five of her relatives, who spent about a half hour slipping and sliding around in the mud.

When play time was over, mom wiped Nandita’s eyes and ears clear from caked on mud with her trunk.

Have You Driven Past Google’s Self-Driving Car? Possibly…

Self-driving cars are an idea of the future, right?

We’ve seen all the futuristic movies where cars drive and park themselves (right before they take over the world), but it may surprise you to hear the future is closer than you think.

Google invented a self-driving car that has already racked up over 140,000 miles and you could have driven next to it without even knowing it, according to TIME (of course Google superstitiously has a robotic car driving all over the country. It’s all part of their plan to take over the world.)

Before you go out and pre-order your own, you should be aware that the idea is still in it’s research and development phase. Currently, Google’s car has about $150,000 of equipment on it, and that’s before the company tries to turn a profit.

Commercial self-driving cars are eons away:

It’s going to be a long time before these things are on the road, and not for reasons that you may think. People like driving their cars, according to Doug Aamoth of TIME. There’s going to be hefty political battles and legislation debating whether or not driverless cars are safe and legal and people will be uncomfortable adopting the idea into their lives. But one day, not far in the future, people will have the same debate questioning whether it’s safe and legal to still allow humans to drive cars.

Mark the date, friends, the future is here:

Have You Heard Of The ‘No-Mobile-Phone’ Phobia?

$

Did you know the average U.S. consumer is never more than three feet away from their phone?

This came from GetElastic.com, which made me think about the following question: If I took your phone away from you, in what ways would it hinder you?

I know I’d be in trouble with work. I’d miss out on social invitations. I’d lose touch with my parents and when showing up to a movie, I’d be reduced to shining a flashlight in everybody’s eyes while asking, “is that you, Stacy?” (And, by the way, I’d have to remember to bring my own flashlight, because without a phone, I wouldn’t have that either.)

A cell phone has become a necessity in life. We can’t function without a connection to the world and the average smartphone user checks it 40 times a day (while it remains in a three foot radius of their body). That is literally disgusting–literally. You take your phone into the bathroom with you and then keep it near your plate while you eat, but our cell phones have become an extension of us. They are like another limb.

If you feel separation anxiety with your phone, you are not alone.

Iowa State University recently conducted a psychological test that surveyed respondents about their phones. It asked for the truth in statements like, “I would feel uncomfortable without constant access to information through my smartphone.”

Phone separation anxiety is a real issue that has lead some researchers to come up with a diagnosis: nomophobia–or no-mobile-phone phobia. The disorder is not recognized in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual…yet.

Our bets tell us it won’t take long for people to recognize they have nomophobia. A previous study of more than 2,000 U.K. adults found that 58% of men and 47% of women have the not-yet-real phobia. Additionally, respondents also said they feel anxiety when their phone has to be turned off.

Are we bad at connecting IRL?

Some would say nomophobia isn’t a real form of anxiety, it’s just an extension of other anxiety disorders projected onto a piece of technology. The real issue stems from our inability to connect socially or from having fears of isolation that are made more real with technology.

The phone is not the problem. It just provides a convenient outlet for a problem that has existed long before Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

Jenny, a Golden Retriever puppy, is training to be a service dog through Warrior Canine Connection. The program trains Golden and Labrador Retrievers and places them with injured veterans. However, these hard-working puppies don’t get placed with a veteran until they turn 2 years old. Until then, dogs like Jenny are placed in homes to be trained and socialized.

Jenny’s temporary family decided to treat the pup with a trip to the beach, and like any Golden Retriever, she had a blast splashing in the waves and digging in the sand.

According to a post on Jenny’s official Facebook page: “I had the best day ever! I want to go to the beach everyday! I can’t believe it took Mama this long to take me for my first time. The most important thing is that it has water — and lots of it! I have a video to show you of all the fun I had in the ocean.”

Take a look at Jenny’s exciting first time at the beach for a guaranteed smile.

Overwhelmed with all the new sensations, Jenny couldn’t decide if she wanted to hold onto the shell or splash around in the water.

Inspired by the made-to-order street treats of Thailand, two brothers Wilson and Richard Tam along with their partner David Chen, decided to open a unique ice cream roll shop called 10Below in New York City.

Each delicious creation is hand-made to order in front of customer’s eyes in under two minutes. The high-tech cold plate reaches extremely cold temperatures that makes the ice cream have smaller ice molecules, which results in a creamier, smoother texture. And because it’s made so fresh, you won’t find any preservatives or stabilizers in the ingredients. As 10Below puts it: “It’s ice cream in its rawest form.”

Take a look at the incredible way this ice cream shop is making ice cream:

The first step involves pouring and freezing the cream, and mixing the ingredients together.

The biggest moments that you look forward to is your new baby’s life, is when they take their first steps, and when they speak their first words.

You probably never thought that when they first speak, what they actually say will throw you for a loop.

Kids constantly pick up stuff all around them- the things you say, the things your family says, and anything they hear on TV or on the computer.

Now pair that with barely being able to form words or sentences yet, and what comes out is a bunch of mumbo jumbo.

This is exactly what happened with 3-year-old Maizzey, who tried to explain to her mother why she spilled her brother’s bottle, but it wasn’t making any sense.

Maizzey might be the most convincing toddler we’ve ever seen, even though we have no idea what she’s saying.

Take a look:

Did you understand either? We didn’t think so.

Just A Chicken Sitting Where He Shouldn’t

Who said cats and birds are mortal enemies?

This confusing video is making us all scratch our heads and wonder what the heck is going on here. Aren’t chickens and cats supposed to be mortal enemies, and even if they can get along, why has this cat aloud the bird to sit on its head? What does the cats head offer that a plush couch does not?

Maybe the chicken is just looking for a bird’s eye view of the living room. Perhaps the cat’s head was a little chilly. Maybe it’s a mutually beneficial relationship (remember studying symbiotic relationships, kids?).

Or maybe the bird is just torturing the poor cat.

The funniest part of the video isn’t that it has a chicken sitting on a cat’s head. The funniest part is that it consists only of a chicken sitting on a cats head. Nothing follows and neither move. Both the chicken and cat are trolling us hard as we wonder what happened, while we never feel the relief of knowing.

Whatever the case may be, you’re going to love this video of a chicken sitting on a cats head.

In some cases, it makes us want to run our fingers through our hair and scream out to the world. Other times, it comes with feelings of being at the top of a roller coaster. And sometimes, you just have to run around in a circle, chase your tail and roll in the dirt.
